Exchange with Chief Rabbi Casper about Candidate Search for Oxford Synagogue Pulpit Opening (1964)

My dear Rabbi Lamm, I hope this finds you and your family in good health, and I take this opportunity once more to send you the best wishes of my wife and myself. I understand from Mr. Barnett (who, apart from his connection with the Education Board, is also a member of our Oxford Synagogue) that he has had some correspondence with you in which you suggested that you might be able to recommend a suitable Rabbi for Oxford. You have seen the Synagogue and I am sure you have a good idea of the sort of Rabbi that we need for this important post. As you know, we are now actively engaged in seeking the right man, because Dr. Abt is due to retire towards the end of this year. Mr. Barnett tells me that you did have somebody in mind, and I should be grateful if you would let me know who it is, so that I can follow up the matter with him. Clearly the appointment is one which concerns me very directly and my approval will be necessary. For my own part, I am anxious to get as good a man as we possibly can in order to strengthen our forces over here. Please do let me know if you can make any proposals in this regard. Your thought and assistance in this matter would be deeply appreciated. With kind personal regards, Yours very sincerely, Chief Rabbi

Letter to R. Casper about His Appointment as Chief Rabbi in South Africa (1964)

Dear Rabbi Casper: I just read in today’s Jewish Telegraphic Agency Report of your election as Chief Rabbi of the Federation of Synagogues. Permit me to be amongst the first of your “foreign” friends to congratulate you and wish you well in your new, distinguished post. I have no doubt that Federation and all of South African Jewry will always have reason to rejoice in their splendid and wise choice. May the Almighty be with you in all that you do and inspire you to guide your people on the highest levels of Jewish Torah leadership.Fondest regards to Mrs. Casper.Sincerely,RABBI NORMAN LAMMNL\:ffP.S. My efforts with regard to a successor to Dr. Abt have thus far been futile.
