Letter of Condolence to Grunfeld Family upon Passing of Dayan Grunfeld (1975)
Dear Mrs. Grunfeld, Naomi, and Mr. Grunfeld: I am broken-hearted by the devastating news that I just heard about the demise of my dear friend and the crown of your family, the late and lamented Dayan Grunfeld. Nothing that I can say will add to the lustre of his impeccable and enduring reputation. He was a man whose unique combinations of talent, achievements, and dimensions of personality made him into a Jewish leader sui generis, and hence his passing is all the more devastating to a generation so poor in great spirits. I know what this must mean for your family – and I therefore hesitate to encroach upon this sacred sorrow that now envelops you. But I do want you to know that there are hundreds, nay thousands, beyond England who share in your grief, and this knowledge of how beloved and revered Dayan Grunfeld was will, I hope and pray, in some measure lighten your great burden. May his memory ever prove a source of strength to all of you, and may you be comforted by the Almighty amongst all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Sincerely yours, Rabbi Norman Lamm
