Letter to E.J. Mazgaonkar about Replacing Books Lost in Poona Flood (1961)

My Dear Mr. Mazgaoonker, I was terribly sorry to hear about the flood which inundated Poona and which caused the destruction of your home. I can appreciate how terrible the consequences were, but I join with you in thanking Almighty God that at least there was no loss of life or limb. Insofar as your request for religious books, which were also lost in the flood, I might suggest that you turn to our friend Mr. Abraham Jhirad, Executive Director of the UOJC of India, with headquarters at the Magen Hasidim Synagogue in Bombay. We have sent him quite a number of books, and you may tell him that I authorize him sending to you those which you need and which you mentioned in your letter. It is much easier, insofar as shipping problems are concerned, to get them from Bombay. If, however, Mr. Jhirad does not have these particular books, or does not have them in sufficient quantity, please let me know exactly what it is you need and I will ask the UOJC Office to assist you. Please give my very best regards to Mrs. Mazgaoonker and to the Daniel family. Also please remember me to the young lady, I think her name is Bibi Samuel, who was secretary of the Poona Zionist Organization. There was also the man who was my host during the night I spent in Poona and whose name eludes me. Please give them all my very best wishes.Sincerely yours,Rabbi Norman Lamm

My Dear Mr. Mazgaonkar: I am terribly, terribly sorry that I failed to answer your previous letter. I make it a practice to answer all correspondence, especially those of dear friends. Your letter must have been misplaced, for I cannot imagine so neglecting it as not to answer altogether. I am pleased that all is well with you and I do hope that you will remember me to your family, and to all our mutual friends in Bombay as well as in Poona. I have been thinking that I wanted to send you a gift of some books for the coming festival of Purim. However, because I do not know what you most need and want, I respectfully request that you accept the enclosed with all my good wishes as an expression of my esteem and prayers for a very happy and joyous Purim for you, your family, and all Israel.Cordially,RABBI NORMAN LAMM

Exchange with E.J. Mazgaonkar about Sickness, Books, and Aliyah of Indian Jewry (1971)

Dear Rabbi Lamm, Shalom. I really do not know what you would think of me for not replying your kind letter of March 31, 1971. Kindly excuse me and accept my apology for this abnormal delay, which is due to my sickness. I was down with severe attack of chronic Bronchitis, which used to worry me a lot. I am now somewhat better and I am trying to push through all my pending letters. I am still under doctor treatment due to this attack. It seems that my heart is become weak. Doctor has prescribed me "Herzolan" heart tonic and considers that I have to take Resdonal tablets, one in the morning & one in the evening. I have to go again for a check to Doctor on 26th July. I am told not to walk much or exert myself. I have curtailed my activities due to my sickness. Well God is merciful. I have full faith in "EL ELOHAI ISRAEL," Lord God of Israel. He will look after me & have His mercy on me. Amen.During Passover I enjoyed my prayers through your Prayer Book which you had sent me some time back. I understand the meaning of the prayers since there is also English side by side with Hebrew. I thank you again for your kind gift of those prayer books really. I am much obliged & thankful to you.I am a bit weak, hence I close my letter with kind regards and good wishes to you & your family. My wife joins as same.Yours sincerely,E.J.
