Letter from Dr. Weiss to Ms. Zimmerspitz about the Need for Bene Israel Hebrew Teachers Fluent in Maharati (1963)

Dear Miss Zimmerapits, I have before me a copy of your letter of Iyar 12 to Rabbi Norman Lamm and his reply to you of Iyar 16. Rabbi Lamm advised you to write to me in the middle of June if you were still interested. No such letter was received by me. Therefore, you have no right and no reason to complain that "it seems such a shame" that it is difficult to get information. The one letter you wrote was immediately answered by Rabbi Lamm, who is indeed a very busy man. Your letter of Elul 21 is being answered today, the day of its receipt, by another rather busy person, namely myself. Now to your inquiry: While there is a great need for Hebrew teachers in India, the need is, in the main, for teachers who are themselves Indian Jews, preferably members of the Bene Israel community, who are fully conversant with Indian, conditions and background and also speak Marathi, the language of the Bene Israel. There are a few Hebrew teachers who have been brought to India from Israel, through the Jewish Agency and its Bombay office. The salary scale is extremely low, in keeping with the Indian standards. We here have not received any requests for Hebrew teachers. The travel costs alone seem to make it more advisable to supply the needs for teaching personnel from Israel. Should you desire more detailed information on any possible vacancies, you would do best by writing directly to Mr. Israel Kelman, The Jewish Agency, 137, Mahatma Gandhi Rd., Bombay 1, India. With all good wishes for a K'tivah V'chatimah Tovah, I am Sincerely yours, Dr. Samson R. Weiss Executive Vice President Cc: Rabbi Norman Lamm
