Exchange with Rev. White about the Onset of the Messianic Age (1969)
Dear Rabbi Lamm: I had occasion recently to read in an issue of TRADITION the very interesting article, entitled, “The Religious Meaning of the Six Day War.” Many of the opinions expressed in regard to the nearness of the Messianic age are completely in line with the thinking of most evangelical Christian students of the Bible. We differ only on the question of the One whom we expect to usher in this Messianic age. In this regard a couple lines in the article struck me very forcefully – “The more we talk about him, the less likely he’s going to come. Perhaps, they meant that when you start talking about Messiah you become so involved trying to interpret him that when he’ll come and say ‘Hello, I’m the Messiah, you’ll be so busy at a PILPUL about Messianic ages you won’t even recognize him.’” I have a couple books in my library that I thought might possibly interest you, one especially in regard to the question of the Symposium, from the Christian viewpoint. I have secured extra copies of these and am taking the liberty of sending them to you under separate cover. Please accept them with my compliments, and I trust that in them you will find something of interest. Any comments that you might have after looking them over would be welcome. I do not want to impose these books upon you, and therefore if for any reason you would rather not accept them I will be glad to pay the postage for their return. With best wishes, Kenneth White
