Exchange with Israel Volotin about Having Shabbat Elevator in Synagogue and When to Consult a Rabbi (1972)
Dear Rabbi: Shlit'a, Congregation Bikur Cholim Machzikay Hadath is presently completing its new Synagogue. The Synagogue was built with a balcony which will serve as an Ezras Noshim. The balcony is 30 feet (or the equivalent of 3 stories height) above the level of the sanctuary proper. In order to allow our elderly women to come to Synagogue for services, provisions were made for an elevator from ground level to the Ezras Noshim. However, before installing the elevator, we would want to know the halachic requirements and provisions for the use of such an elevator; i.e. timing devices. According to our understanding there are devices available that render automatic operation of an elevator feasible within the realm of halacha. We turn to you for assistance in this Shaalah and eagerly await your reply. Wishing you a Chag Kosher Ve'someach,Yours truly,BIKUR CHOLIM MACHZIKAY HADATH CONGREGATIONI.
