Letter to Gusta Stromer about Scholarship Donation for Russian Child (1974)
Dear Gusta, First, let me tell you how much I admire you for all that you are doing for our Russian brothers and sisters. If I keep repeating this, it is only because I mean it. Mindy told me about the ברית of the seven-month-old child and how extremely attentive and concerned you were. Now, to the second Russian problem – the [redacted] child. I talked to Rabbi Lefkowitz of the Yeshiva of Rambam about taking the five-year-old into kindergarten next year. He informed me that they never give scholarships to kindergarten children, but will make an exception in this case. I must say that he was extremely nice about it. Please have [her] call him at DE8-3972 at her earliest convenience to register the child for next year and to mention my name. The person in charge of the summer day camp for the same school is Rabbi Hartstark. This is a much more difficult proposition. However, Rabbi Hartstark knows me from many years ago and apparently is anxious to get me to help him in his fundraising. The full cost for the child is \$863, one which, he tells me, the camp makes no profit. I told him I will try to raise part or all of that amount, and he agreed that he will accept the child. Please have \[her] call him at the same number as above as soon as possible.Meanwhile, I shall try to raise the money, and when I do, I shall let you know.Once again, all my thanks.Cordially,Rabbi Norman LammNK\:cw
