Exchange with Belle Blistein about a Student Connecting to Judaism Through Hillel (1975)
Dear Rabbi Lamm: I am responding for Professor Kahn while his activity is temporarily curtailed due to illness. We are inclined to believe that a link to "the world of Jews and Judaism" is reasonably alive because she has come to Hillel House several times during this semester. Further, she has stopped in to chat casually with Professor Kahn at his office at the University. We have also learned that she maintains contact with some of the friends she cultivated through Hillel. It is, however, a rather delicate situation to probe beyond these encouraging signs. In the past, when she frequently came to Hillel House to study or to spend an hour playing the piano, I was able to develop a friendly relationship with her. At times we had conversations during which she was able to verbalize some of her concerns. I will make the effort, as discreetly as possible, to contact her and try to revive this relationship with the hope of being of some help.Professor Kahn and I share your concern about her and certainly empathize with her grandmother. Please be reassured that she appears to be in good health. If I am able to see her, I will be more than happy to report to you promptly. Please do not ever feel that a request such as you have made is in any sense an imposition.Sincerely,Belle S. Blistein Secretary
