Letter to R. Skydell about Biblical Usage of the Word "Panim" as a Subject (1972)

Dear Adrian: I am writing in response to your offer to me this evening to donate $10,000 to my favorite charity if I can give you even a single example of the word פנים being preceded by a verb, at which it is the object, in the plural. Please make out your check to The Jewish Center Charity Foundation, Inc., 131 W. 86 St., New York, N.Y. The following are some examples, only the first of which is debatable:

Exchange with R. Skydell about R. Lamm's Appointment to YU Presidency and RIETS Scholarship (1976)

Dear Norman: I convey to you my blessings and felicitations upon your appointment to guide and shape the destinies of a multitude of young Jewish scholars. I find no more fitting prayer to address to you than the one culled from the prophet Hosea: וּפָרְחָה כַשּׁוֹשָׁנָה וְיַשֵּׁר שָׁרָשָׁיו כַּלְּבָנוֹן. יֵלְכוּ יֹנְקוֹתָיו וִיהִי כַזַּיִת הוֹדוֹ וְרֵיחַ לוֹ כַלְּבָנוֹן – “May your administration delineate the glory and the grandeur of the prophet’s imagery and may it above all embody the indestructible strength and sturdiness of the roots of Lebanon. May the abiding souls of your two giant predecessors hover over you, and may our beloved Yeshiva, through your ministering hand, continue to be a soil that will nurture in our generation.” Adrian Skyde P.S. May I say that my interest in the Torah chambers of Yeshiva is deep. Ruth and I established this year a RIETS scholarship in memory of my father whose base we expect to broaden and deepen in the coming years.
