Letter from Isaiah Shapurkar about "Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism" and "Mebasser" (1961)
Dear Rabbi Lamm, Many thanks indeed for your Letter of February 21, 1961, and for the glowing remarks about my services during your stay in Bombay. I shall deem it a privilege to be similarly useful to any other Rabbi who may visit India in future on behalf of the U.O.J.C.A. for religious propaganda. Permit me to add that during the course of my service under Britishers in India I had occasion to serve as Secretary to more than twenty-five Oxford and Cambridge Graduates of the Indian Civil Service. You were, however, the first American from whom I had occasion to take down notes, and I felt that in manner of speech and writing the British accent and spelling differs considerably from American.I am looking forward to receiving the copy of "Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism" which you were so kind enough to send me, and for which I am grateful. Rest assured that on receipt I shall go through it very minutely.Mr. Saul Penkar has sent me five issues of your journal "Tradition". These will prove useful to us for "Mebasser" as we intend to extract material therefrom which is appropriate to Indian conditions.I hope you will make every endeavour to keep ״Mebasser״ alive at least for the first five years through financial assistance from U.O.J.C.A. I agree with you that religious renaissance in India must come through intensive Torah education, and I am sure the American Jewry will help us to bring it about through ״Mebasser״.With kind regards,Sincerely yours.(Isaiah Isaac Shanurkar)P.S. I regret I could not reply earlier, as I was out ofBombay for some time.
