Letter to Zev Wolfson about His Meeting with President Lyndon Johnson (1964)

Dear Zev: Last night two people called me after their return from Washington: Rabbi Jakobovits and Mr. Max Stern. Both of them gave me glorious reports about the luncheon in the Senate Building and the meeting with President Johnson. I understand that the success of the afternoon surpassed all expectations. I want, therefore, to express to you in writing my sincerest and most enthusiastic congratulations. There is no doubt that the success of the occasion is a tribute to your own loyalty, competence and perseverance. You have really done a wonderful job, and you ought to be very proud of your splendid achievements. Letter to R. Shure about Lack of Interest in Project Among Congregation (1967)

Dear Rabbi Shure: Thank you very much for your proposal, so carefully prepared and so convincingly written. I used this material in broaching your proposal to a friend of mine who I had hoped would lend his support. Quite unfortunately, and to my great regret, he expressed absolutely no interest in the project. He was the only one in my congregation who I thought might be interested. Apparently I was unsuccessful, and I am terribly sorry, therefore, to have to return the material to you enclosed. Letter to the Memorial Foundation of Jewish Culture Recommending Doctoral Student's Grant Application (1972)

Gentlemen: I am sending you enclosed the biographical sketch of [redacted] who is anxious to obtain a grant to study for his doctorate in Yale. I shall be writing to the applicant, advising him to file a formal application with the Foundation. I appreciate that the deadline has passed for grants for 1972–1973, but this is a special case in that the applicant is a Yemenite. Considering the paucity of Oriental Jewish scholars in Israel, and the social and political tensions about this question, it may perhaps be wise to waive your formal rules in this case.
