Letter to Abraham Jhirad about Expanding Educational Opportunities in India (1961)

Dear Mr. ______, I am writing this Letter to you in your capacity as President of _____. As you well know, throughout my three weeks stay in India I have emphasised time and again the need for all of us to expand our educational facilities in order to ensure our survival as Jews. To that end the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America is willing to extend its assistance to the various synagogues through the offices of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of India We shall be working together in a cooperative venture. We wish to encourage you In every way to provide these facilities for both youths and adults.However, it is necessary for the Indian Jews themselves to take the initiative. As I have mentioned in my talks, every synagogue must accept upon itself the obligation to assist in the education of its young. May I therefore respectfully request you to give your complete cooperation to our newly appointed Executive Director and Secretary Mr. A.D. Jhirad. He will be contacting you in an attempt to use the facilities of the synagogue for classes and lectures. If every synagogue will make at least some effort to assist in the programme, we in America as well as in Israel will be glad to do more than our share.For the sake of our people and our Torah I know that you will spare no effort in putting these plans into effect. Letter to R. Waltner about Difficulties of Sending Indian Students to Morocco (1961)

My dear Rabbi Waltner: May I thank you once again for your interest in assisting the Jewish community in India with regard to the training and education of rabbis. Now that I have returned from India only this past week, I find that it would be most impractical to send Indian students to Morocco. First, they are not sufficiently prepared in their Jewish studies. Second, the language requirements in India are so difficult it would be too much to ask of them to learn French as well.Regretfully, therefore, I have not been able to recommend any young men to the Yeshiva Ets Haim.Please accept my thanks once again.With all good wishes,Sincerely yours,Rabbi Norman Lamm

Letter to Dr. Weiss with Suggestions to Improve "Mebasser" in India (1962)

Dear Dr. Weiss: This letter concerns a note sent to me by Mr. Feurestein on May 4, 1962, a copy of which I sent to you. I quite agree with him that “Mebasser” leaves much to be desired. There has been too much reprinting of trite sermons and other collections of platitudes, and too little evidence of creative material relevant to Indian Jewry. I would appreciate it if you would, in your next letter to Jhirad, emphasize the above as well as the three points made by Mo. Enclosed you will find a letter from Jhirad to me, which came together with a copy of a letter he sent to you. I think it’s in place for you to answer the letter he mailed directly to you. Meanwhile, would you do me a personal favor and include in it mention of the fact that I am presently too occupied to write to him, and that if Providence should once more send me to India I would be most happy to fulfill his personal requests.Sincerely,Rabbi Norman Lammcc: Mr. Feurestein
