Letter to Samuel Rudin about the New Superintendent (1965)

Dear Mr. Rudin: I am writing this letter on behalf of Mrs. Lamm and myself, to tell you how very pleased we are with the services of our new superintendent, Mr. Alfred Sanches. We have found him to be at all times courteous, cooperative, and helpful. We are especially impressed by his attitude towards the Jewish tenants in the building. For the first time since we moved into 27 West 86th Street, a superintendent has decided to devote one corner of the lobby to Hanukkah "Menorah" and decorations, in addition to the usual Christmas paraphernalia in the building. Neither I nor anyone else requested this of Mr. Sanches. The fact that he did so voluntarily, together with his brother, Bobby (whom we find to be a perfectly delightful and friendly person), certainly speaks well of him.A landlord so often receives complaints, we thought you might like to receive this letter of commendation and appreciation.Warmest personal regards,Sincerely yours,RABBI NORMAN LAMMNLJ/1

Dear Rabbi, One of the sins for which I'll ask God forgiveness this coming holiday is belated expressions of gratitude. But I’m genuinely grateful to you for your letter of July 5, in which you honored me by forwarding your recommendation for my fellowship application, stated your intention to go through the draft to visit with you, pay every visit, ring over Ruth’s article (and mine), and top it all off with some delectable anecdotes concerning the deletion by the UOC of the U form – that’s more than your portion in inter-university Eden. A letter which combines statements of favors done, promises of future hospitality, gracious compliments, and congenial frankness is not common correspondence these days –

Greetings from the heart of the beautiful English (!!) countryside. Sorting things out – tomorrow back to London to make preps for the big day. The challenges + problems here in this unique institution require much determination to solve השקפות התורה, yet no doubt the good Lord of Israel will note entirely neglect those who at least attempt to bring to fruition a genuine דירה בתחתונים!
