Letter to R. Rabinowitz about Guest Lecturing at The Jewish Center (1961)

My dear Rabbi Rabinowitz: I am delighted to learn that you will be visiting in New York from December 25 to January 18. At present I have no plans to be out of town during that time and do hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you and visiting with you during your stay with your sister-in-law and brother-in-law. On behalf of Rabbi Jung and myself I would like to extend to you an invitation to preach from the pulpit of the Jewish Center on Saturday, January 7. Letter to R. Jung about Recommendations for Changes in New Soncino Chumash Edition (1967)

Dear Rabbi Jung: Pursuant to our agreement to divide the Five Books of the Soncino Humash in order to recommend any absolutely necessary changes for republication together with a Siddur, I looked through the Book of Numbers, and found only two places where I would enter some minor changes. The first is not absolutely urgent but advisable. It occurs on page 594, where the commentary, speaking of the priestly blessing, distinguishes between Ashkenazi and Sephardi customs with regard to the blessing. I do not know of any such distinction between these communities; however, I am aware of a distinct difference between the custom as it prevails in the State of Israel and the one that we practice in the Diaspora. I think this is what Rabbi Hertz was referring to, and a slight change here would be worthwhile.Page 692. In speaking of the laws of in״ heritance, in his commentary on the episode with the daughters of Zelophehad, R.Hertz makes the following statement: ״The Order of Inheritance as developed by later Jewish law is as follows" This statement is one which roust be changed• One might simply omit the word "later," or, preferably sub-stitute the word "in” for ’,as developed by later."Other than these two matters, I have not found anything that should be objectionable, although there is a good deal of dated material.NL

Letter to R. Peli about His Address at The Jewish Center (1967)

Dear Pinchas: I am sending you enclosed a copy of an article that is to appear shortly in our Bulletin, by way of a reminder that we are all looking forward to your address on January 27th. Once again, I want to thank you for all your helpful suggestions. My best to Peninah and the children. Sincerely, Rabbi Norman Lamm. We are pleased to announce two special programs that will take place with the resumption of our Seudot on Saturdays. In an effort to give special cultural content to the Seudot, we have decided to devote one of them to the Hebrew language, and the other to Yiddish. The first of these will be our Hebrew ”seudah.” It will take place after Minhah service on January 27, 1968 at PM. The entire Seudah will be conducted in Ivrit, and the speaker for this occasion will be Prof. Pinchas Peli, visiting Professor of Hebrew Literature at the Erna Michael College of Yeshiva University, currently on leave from his duties as Editor-in-Chief of the illustrated Israeli weekly, Panim-el-Panim.It is our hope that the ”seudah” will be attended not only by those who understand Hebrew, but also by those who love the Holy Language and perhaps be encouraged thereby to further their own studies.We are planning the Yiddish ”seudah" for a later date during the season. An appropriate announcement will follow at the proper time.
