Exchange with Ronald Misheiker about R. Lamm's South Africa Itinerary (1963)

Dear Mr. Misheiker: Thank you very much for your kind letter of September 16 which I just received. In accordance with your request, I cabled you today indicating that I could accept your invitation if you would revise your calendar to allow for my arriving in your city on Monday February 3 and leaving on Thursday February 20, P.O.I. I certainly hope that the difference of a little more than a week will not materially affect your plans for what I trust will be a most successful campaign. I have, of course, heard a great deal about Johannesburg Jewry, and have both written for and seen some of your outstanding periodicals. Mr. H. S. Liebgott, whom it was my pleasure to meet some weeks ago, added many important details, and your own letter was most enlightening. A few items remain to be clarified before final arrangements are agreed upon. One I mentioned to Mr. Liebgott, and that is – my itinerary. My previous experience in lecture tours in foreign lands has been that the tendency to prepare an overcrowded schedule is difficult to resist, but that in addition to taking its toll of one’s health, it is not always effective for the purpose of the visit. Beyond a certain limit, there sets in a law of diminishing returns. I would therefore like to see and approve of the final itinerary prepared in advance and sent to me here. Second, there is the question of financial arrangements. In order to accept your invitation I must give up a number of important lectures in the States with pay fees. I am eager, therefore, to know from you as soon as possible what your intentions are with regard to compensation beyond the necessary expenses incurred. The work you are doing is of the greatest significance, and I will be honored to assist in any way I can in advancing your goals of “hinukh” and encouraging the study of Torah. Letter to Dr. Weiss about His South Africa Travelogue (1963)

Dear Dr. Weiss: I have read through your "South African Travelogue" with great interest. It is a most comprehensive document and, for me personally, full of extremely valuable insights. I only hope I can do as well for the Board of Education as you have done for the Federation of Synagogues. I do hope I will have the opportunity of talking with you at greater length much in advance of my forthcoming trip, please G-d. Letter to R. Rabinowitz about Planning South Africa Visit (1963)

Dear Rabbi Rabinowitz: I have not heard from you in quite a while, and hope that all is well with you and your family. I thought you might be interested in knowing that I have been invited by the South African Board of Jewish Education to visit the country this coming February, please God. I hope to leave for Johannesburg on February 1st, and return February 25th or 26th. This is one time I truly regret that you are not in your old post of Chief Rabbi of South Africa. It would have been a pleasure to spend three weeks together with you. Meanwhile, if there is anything of a special nature you think I ought to know, would you be good enough, if time permits, to drop me a note and let me know so that I may guide myself accordingly.
