Letter from Yeshayahu Leibowitz about Extraterrestrial Life and the Relationship Between Science and Religion (1966)

רב נכבד, הנני מודה לכב' על שהואיל להמציא לי אח מאמרו החשוב והמעניין, שאותו קראתי בענין רב. ברצוני להביע לכב' ברכת "יישר כוחו" על דיונו המעמיק – וזאת למרות הסתייגותי מצדדים מסויימים שבמאמר זה. הסתייגותי זו מתייחסת בראש וראשונה לעצם הצגת הבעיה – כאילו יש משמעות דתית (religious implication) למציאות המבעית כולה או לעובדה מן העובדות או לתופעה מן התופעות שבמציאות הטבעית, למשל – לעובדת מציאותם או אי-מציאותם של חיים מחוץ לכדור-הארץ. ע״י כך היהדות מוצגת כאילו הי תה השקפה מסויימת על העולם, על הטבע, על האדם וכו‘ – לצידן או לעומתן של השקפות אחרות על נושאים אלה, ושעל ההבדלים בין ההשקפות מתנהל הוויכוח בין האמונה ובין הכפירה. גישה זו מרוקנת את היהדות מהכנה וממשמעותה הדתיים ועושה אותה חולין. הנקודה המכרעת, לדעתי, היא שהיהדות (ואני מתכוון ליהדות המקורית המסרתית: יהדות התורה והמצוות) היא עבודת ה‘ – התביעה המוחלטת המוצגת לאדם לעבוד את ה‘ ע״י קיום המצוות, באשר זוהי כל תכלית האדם. מבחינה זו – הסטרוקטורה של העולם והמכאניזמים של המבע הם אירלוואנטיים מבחינה דתית, ומאותה בחינה אין החיים נבדלים מכל תופעה טבעית אחרת, ואין לכדור-הארץ יתרון מכל חלק אחר של העולם. אין אף לאדם, כנתון טבעי, שום יתרון מכל יצור חי אחר - ורק עבודת ה‘ היא המקנה לאדם מעמד מיוחד, שאינו תלוי בסטרוקטורה של העולם ולא בטבע החיים והאדם. הסעיף הראשון של שו"מ או״ח הוא: "יתגבר כארי לעמוד בבוקר לעבודת ה‘" – ולא לעמוד בבוקר כדי לדעת משהו על העולם, על הטבע, על החיים או על האדם. ידיעת כל הדברים האלה היא עניינו של המדע, שהוא אינטרס אנושי ועיסוק אנושי, ובו האדם רשאי לעסוק – אך הוא חולין ואין לו משמעות דתית של קדושה. האמונה הדתית היא האמונה בהובתו של אדב לעבוד את ה‘, ולא האמונה בתמונת-עולם מסויימת.כאן גלום אחד הניגודים העמוקים שבין היהדות ובין הנצרות, שאלהיה התגלם באדם ועלי אדמות – ומכאן השיבותם המיוחדת של האדם ושל כדור-הארץ. ואילו אלהינו "לא ישיגוהו משיגי הגוף" ו"אין העולם מקומו אלא הוא מקומו של העולם". הנצרות היא אנתרופוצנמריח, היהדות - תיאוצנמרית.יפה עשה כב‘ שהעמיד במרכז את הרמב״ם, שאיננו the greatest Jewish philosopher of all times, אלא הרבה יוהד מזה: הוא גדולי אישי-ההלכה בישראל. לפיכך יש השיבות מיוחדת לשלילה המוחלטת שהרמב״ם שולל …

Dear Dr. Asimov: I understand you have a book to be published in the near future by Doubleday concerning extraterrestrial intelligent life. I therefore have the honor to send to you the enclosed reprint of an article I wrote on the subject, in the hope of receiving some reaction from you when you have an opportunity to glance through the reprint. Letter to Dr. Himler about Antisemitic Medical Journal Article on the "Strange Murder of William of Norwich" (1971)

Dear Dr. Himler: A member of my congregation showed me the November 1, 1971 issue of the New York Journal of Medicine, and pointed out the article entitled "Strange Murder of William of Norwich." I must express to you my sense of shock and outrage that such an obviously anti-Semitic article should have been accepted for publication in your Journal. The last 25 or 30 years certainly should have taught us that racial bigotry is all the more noxious when disguised in pseudo-scientific jargon than when it is bellowed forth with vulgar crudeness. For your Society to permit publication of an article that pretends to scientific accuracy and which does nothing more than disinter ancient falsehoods that have caused untold anguish to Jews who were innocent hostages in a hostile environment, is an outrageous abdication of editorial responsibility and a singularly scandalous expression of insensitivity.
