Dear Shuby: I am dictating this letter to my secretary over the phone, long distance. I want to tell you, first, how very much I enjoyed your erudite paper at the Convention. A number of the points you made were highly illuminating. Second, I would like to remind you of my request that you mail to me three of the items which you had recommended and which I could not locate. They are: the two articles in the ״Journal of Religion,״ and the book by Hartshhorne. I would be deeply grateful to you if you would send them on to me c/o Camp Morasha, Lake Como, Pennsylvania. Letter from Lawrence Kobrin about Advice for Marriage (1967)

Dear Rabbi Lamm – There must be some point at which personal responsibility stops and friendships above takes over, for it is hard for me to view all your help, advice, encouragement etc. over the past several weeks as part of anything like congregational "duty." I can barely begin to find the words adequate to express my gratitude. In the annals of rabbinics of this decade, the resolutions of all the participants at our חופה was certainly something of an achievement. But your own part in helping me work things out was clearly the most vital one – for that I am specifically grateful. (Incidentally, did you notice Rabbi Jakobovits' essay to the defense of Halachic niceties – all that was missing was a signed appraisal for the ring).Both Ruth and I look forward to many opportunities to be with you and Mindy and to share simchas together for many years to come. (I assume, of course, that you can manage somehow to reconcile your Sarah to my new status so that she will even permit me to talk to you both.)Sincerely,Larry

Letter to Arthur Friedman Regretting Inability to Attend His Wedding (1967)

Dear Arthur: It is with considerable regret that I write to inform you that I shall be unable to attend and officiate at your wedding on January 13th, p.G. I think you know me well enough to appreciate that had conditions permitted it, I would have considered it both an honor and a pleasure to join you in your great ”simchah.” However, I have been invited to address the World Conference of Orthodox Synagogues which is taking place that week in Jerusalem. My plans call for me to be away for the minimum amount of time necessary for my lecture and other important business, namely, January 6-16, 1968. I hope you will appreciate that the importance of this Conference, the first of its kind in history, is of such magnitude that I had no choice but to accept the invitation. I hope you and your bride will forgive me, and that I shall have the opportunity of joining you on many other happy occasions and, of course, of what I hope and pray will be a long, long life for you of joy and satisfaction.Cordially yours.RABBI NORMAN LAb«4RNL/fz
