Letter to R. Jung about Finding Right Balance on Simchat Torah (1965)

In order to avoid the extremes of coldness and wildness at the Simhat Torah services, I suggest the following: (1) There should be more singing and dancing during Hakofot both at night and the morning. Everybody should be invited to join. (2) Songs should be mimeographed in advance and distributed so that all may join. (3) Troublemakers should be seen personally in advance. (4) Two ushers should be stationed at the "bimah" before and during Musaf services. Please make note of this and make sure that we discuss it before we leave for summer vacations.— NL

Dear Immanuel: I have just spoken with my sister-in-law, Judith, who conveyed to me warm regards from you and Amelie – for which I thank you very much. You mentioned that you may be free for Saturday, November 29th, and I am delighted, especially after the tussle over who should extend the invitation to Bernstein and the Union people in Chicago, who had insisted that they wanted you for Shabbat. I have just tried calling Saul Bernstein, but he is out of town. At any rate, I am very pleased to learn that you will now be able to be with us for the entire weekend.I shall try to make immediate arrangements — please let me know at once if you want it only for Friday night and Saturday, or for Saturday night as well and, possibly, for Sunday night too.A slight problem may be presented for Friday night dinner. We plan to have ours on the tenth floor of The Center, and while I was aware that you use the special elevator you designed for the Synagogue, I do not recall if you avail yourself of elevator arrangements at the Cameron on a floor of Rabbi Soloveitchik’s heter in The Center.The program for that Saturday calls for me to speak and address my son. If it is no imposition on you, it will be my pleasure to invite you to give a drasha about half an hour before Minchah, and possibly to speak at the Shabbat ante. If this can be confirmed in advance, I would like to include it in the Bulletin and make sure of a maximum attendance for about 70.While I was in Nairobi, Kenya, about two years ago, an of course, be kept confidential, Judith gave me information about the Far reception that you and Amelie might want when you are here. I look forward to reciprocating in kind. Would you be able to give me any information about the London person who has served for about two years? לכבוד מו״ר הגדול שליט״א, אחדש״ת, הריני מתכבד לשלוח המחאה רצו״ד שמע״כ מחלק לצדקה כדרכו, ומוכן אני לציית לו ככל יושר יצווה עלי. לפני כמה שבועות הודעתי למע״כ על הד״מ של בני יהושע ז״י דפרשת וישלח אי״ה, ואח״כ שלחתי לו הזמנה להשתתף עמנו בסעודת משתה ובסיום למשניות סדר נזיקין, שיתקיים ביום א׳ לסדר ויצא. יודע אני כמה מעמיסים על כת״ר, וחס אנוכי על עתותיו הן ועל כוחותיו, ולכן לא האמנתי שיכבדני.
