Letter to Shalom Kelman about His Experience in Kerem B'Yavneh and Second-Day Yom Tov Observance in Israel (1973)

Dear Shalom: Thank you for your delightful letter of March 12. The rest of the members of my family will answer, if and when I can twist their arms. Not that they don’t want, but they are normally not letter writers. I am pleased to learn from your letter that you are adjusting better and much happier than you were. I am inclined, now, to agree with you, that were you to remain a second year, you would be better off continuing at ABI rather than הר עציון. The big question, of course, is whether it is worth your remaining one more year.I am interested in what you did with your paper on צדיק ורע לו. If you have it written up, do let me see a copy.With regard to your observance of יו"ט של גליות on Pesach, my feeling is that were I in Israel today I would follow the Israelis in their observance, especially since you are there for a year or probably more. However, I would not eat חמץ on שביעי של פסח. Frankly, I think the question should be answered for your by a local Israeli רב and not by me.Lynda had told us that you and she were going to have סעודת פורים with my sister in Israel on שושן פורים. Letter to Aaron Schreiber about "Halachot Vahalichot" and the Amidah (1990)

Dear Professor Schreiber: It was a pleasure meeting you at the recent convention of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America. I thanked you at that time for your thoughtfulness in responding to my recent Halakhot ve’Halikhot, but I feel it necessary to put my appreciation into writing. I value your supporting comments on various points in the book, and I value equally the alternative explanation you offer for the linkage of kedushah to the third berakhah of the Amidah. I do hope you have an opportunity as well to read my Torah Umadda. Letter to R. Helfgot about "Divrei Bracha U'Moed" and Semichat Geulah Litfillah (2001)

לכבוד ידיד היקר, הרב הנחמד ר' נתנאל הלפגוט לאוי״ט, שלומך ישגא, מה מאוד נעמה לי לעיין בספרך אשר כתבת דברי ברכה ומועד, שהגיע לי כשעודנו בכתובים. חידושיך הם לאמיתה של תורה, ונראה בעליל שהנך שולט בכל החומר ההלכתי השייך לנושא בו אתה דן – גם בהיקף גם בעומק – סימן מובהק שהצלחת לקלוט מיטב תלמודך בשנים שעמלת בתורה בבית אולפנא של ישיבתנו ישיבת רבנו יצחק אלחנן, ודרך הגיונותיך משקיפה שיטת רבנו הגדול מו"ר הגרי"ד סולובייצ'יק זצ״ל. החיבור הנעלה הזה הוא קיום מצות כיבוד אב לאחר מותו. "בן יכבד אב" אמר הנביא מלאכי, וחז״ל קבעו: "אין כבוד אלא תורה". אשרי האב שזכה לבן כזה שהוא מתת הא-ל ועזרת ה' – וזה כבר מרומז בשמך, נתנאל הלפגוט. יישר חילך לאורייתא ותזכה להמשיך לפרסם חדו״ת להנות שוחרי התורה ולומדיה עד מוע״ש. יורשה לי להוסיף הערה שולית כדי שלא להשאיר את הנייר חלק: הבאת את המחלוקת בין המנהג הקבוע שאומרים קדיש בין קרה״ת והפטרה של ט״ב, ורעק״א ואחריו רד״צ הופמן שקדיש בא אחרי ההפטרה. היטבת להגן על מנהג ישראל קדמון והסברת שפרשת התורה שקוראים בט״ב היא בחינת תענית, ואילו ההפטרה היא קיום של אבילות, ולכן הקדיש מתאים למקומו בין קיום של תענית לקיום של אבילות ואינו נחשב כהפסק, הואיל ושתי הקריאות שונות זו מזו. אבל רעק״א כנראה סבר ששתיהן דומות זו לזו, ואם כן הקדיש יהיה הפסק ביניהן ולכן פסק שיבוא אחרי ההפטרה. שמעתי בשם רבנו זצ"ל שהציע להצדיק דברי הרמב״ם בעניין סומכין גאולה לתפילה – שבשחרית הסמיכה פשוטה, אולם בערבית יש מחלוקת ראשונים. הרמב"ם (הלכות תפילה פ״ז ה״יח) כתב: "ובתפלת הערב קורא ק״ש ומברך לפניה ולאחריה וסומך גאולה לתפלה ומתפלל מעומד", כלומר שחייבים לסמוך גאולה לתפילה גם בערבית. אבל קשה – שהלא בנוסח התפילה כותב שאחרי ק״ש אומרים קדיש ואחר כך שמונה עשרה, ואם קדיש הפסק, מדוע בערבית כן אומרים, ואם אינו הפסק, מדוע לא בשחרית? על זה תירץ רבנו מהגמרא (ברכות יב ע״א): "אמר רבה בר חיננא סבא משמיה דרב: כל שלא אמר אמת ויציב שחרית ואמת ואמונה ערבית – לא יצא ידי חובתו, שנאמר: להגיד בבקר חסדך ואמונתך בלילות." בבוקר אנו מתייחסים לעבר – הלילה שזה עתה יצאנו ממנו – ובערב לעתיד, ללילה הקרב ובא. הקדיש הוא כולו תפילה לעתיד – למלכות שמים וגאולת ישראל. לכן בשחרית, שעניינו עבר, הקדיש נחשב הפסק ואינו נאמר שם, אבל בערבית, שע…
