Open Letter to Dr. Norman Lamm (1988)

On Tuesday, March 22, Dr. Norman Lamm, the president of Yeshiva University, spoke in Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue Synagogue. His remarks were widely disseminated. In fact, the New York Times devoted considerable coverage to the event. The title of his address was “Centrist Orthodoxy: Agenda and Vision, Successes and Failures.” The Times report began: “Ultra-Orthodox Jews, including Hasidim, have set the religious agenda for too long in both the United States and Israel, the president of Yeshiva University said Tuesday, calling on moderate Orthodox elements to reassert themselves.... Dr. Lamm said the ultra-Orthodox has been ‘powered by triumphalism,’ which he defined as an attitude of, ‘We are winning, therefore we are right.’” This was not his first time to have attacked the Orthodox right and not the first time that he has sought to rally “centrists” to action. Due to the public nature of his statement, his words should not pass without comment. As a step toward dispelling some of the wrong impressions that were created by his statement, The Jewish Observer presents Professor Aaron Twerski’s open letter to Dr. Norman Lamm. Dear Dr. Lamm, עמו״ש: The remarks that follow are not intended to serve as a rebuttal to you. Nor do they constitute a retreat. As a card-carrying member of the “triumphalist” Orthodox right, and a Hasid to boot, I am confident enough to state without equivocation that our agenda for action will remain very much in place. But I am genuinely confused as to the substantive nature of the “centrist” view of things, as you espoused them. You did make a point of saying that you spoke as president of Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, putting your words into a religious framework. All the more reason that your statement is worthy of scrutiny – and all the more do I find it disturbing. לכבוד ידיד דגול ורע יקר, הרה״ג מוה״ר נחום פרופ׳ לאם שליט״א נשיא ישיבה־אוניברסיטה ניו־יורק אחדשה״ט באה״ר וכמשפט. ראשית – מזמור לתודה, בשם רעייתי ובשמי, על הספר שמע פרי עטך והגותך המבורכים – שהואלת לשלוח לנו. תודה מיוחדת על ההקדשה הנרגשת והיפה. עיינתי בספר בענין מיוחד, שהרי אבי־מורי הרב הנזיר זצ״ל העמיד במשנתו, בספר קול הנבואה – ההגיון העברי השמעי, את כל עולמה האמוני של היהדות על השמיעה הפנימית. הוא היה אומר תמיד: שמע ישראל ה׳ אלקינו ה׳ אחד – נאמר “שמע” ולא “ראה”, כי בענין דעת האלקים והאמונה התמימה – שמיעה גדולה מראיה, בהיות השמיעה על טהרת הקודש ואילו הראיה כרוכה בסכנה של המחשה והגשמה. ולכן צריך “לשמוע את הנראה” – כמקרא מפורש וכל העם רואים את הקולות, וכמדרשו של רבי עקיבא. אכן שמחתי על אשר בספרך זה הנך מזכיר את דרכו ומשנתו של אבי־מורי הרב הנזיר זצ״ל. אמנם, לענ״ד, היה ראוי להרחיב יותר בענין זה של דעת אלקים מתוך השמיעה. אני זוכר שלפני הרבה שנים פרסמת על שיטתו של כ״ק אאמו״ר זצ״ל מאמר חשוב מפרי עטך בביוליטין של ערב הימים הנוראים של המרכז היהודי בניו־יורק – שבו כהנת אז כרב הקהילה – והדברים היו ראויים להשמע. אינני יכול לסיים מכתב זה מבלי להזכיר את הימים הקשים העוברים עלינו, בנושא המערכה שנכפתה עלינו עם צירופם של הריפורמים והקונסרבטיבים ע״י הבג״ץ למועצות הדתיות בארץ. אני מרגיש כי גישתי – גישתכם, הנובעת מנקודת מוצא כלל־ישראלית ומתוך רגשי אחוה ואהבה ושלום ורעות – הולכת ונדחית מפני הלם הקנאות וחוסר האומץ מצדם של היושבים ראשונה במלכות מועצת הרבנות הראשית. לצערי שולטים בנושא פעילי המפלגות החרדיות, שבידיהם נושא זה הוא בבחינת “קרדום לחפור”. הרבנות הראשית נגררת אחרי גדולי התורה של אגודת ישראל וחכמי התורה של ש״ס, והאוירה רוויה שנאה. אני חושש מאד שהמשך המערכה המיוחדת הזאת יגרום נזק חמור למעמדה וסמכותה של הרבנות הראשית. אני שולח אליך מצ״ב שלשה מאמרים שפרסמתי בנושא זה: משפט שלמה (הצופה, ט׳ שבט תשנ״ט – 26.1.99), תשובה לשואלים ולמשיגים (הצופה, כ״ח אדר תשנ״ט – 14.3.99) ותשובה כהלכה (הצופה, ד׳ ניסן תשנ״ט – 21.3.99). דומני שהדברים מדברים בעד עצמם ודי למבין. אני מאד מעונין לשמוע את תגובתך, כי כאן במועצת הרבנות הראשית אני מרגיש כמעט בודד ומבודד – בנושא עקרוני וחשוב זה. ואתה שלום וביתך שלום וכל…

Letter from R. Jakobovits about His Concerns Concerning Religion and Politics in Israel (1974)

Dear Norman, I am turning to you, amongst a select number of leading personalities in Israel, to seek your advice, and possibly your assistance, in an effort to make some contribution towards alleviating the grave crisis afflicting our people in the wake of the Yom Kippur War. Even greater than the threat to Israel’s security from the might and machinations of our enemies from without is the mortal danger from within of disunity and disintegration, sapping Israel’s inner strength, resolve and morale. To Jews with a historical awareness, the present fragmentation and bitter strife in Government, inside the political parties and even in the Rabbinate cannot but be ominously reminiscent of the "Sinat hinam" which, as our Sages invariably maintained, caused the destruction of Jerusalem 1900 years ago.I have urged, both publicly and in private discussions - at any rate during the present emergency when religious faith and national unity are suoh indispensable assets to Jewish survival - that we shift the emphasis in our spiritual confrontations and challenges from legislation to education. Hore specifically, I suggest that 1) secularists be persuaded to admit some regular religious education and religious experience in all schools in Israel and 2) a moratorium be called on all new legislation of religious significance, such as conversions, civil marriage, public Shabbat observance and autopsies.At the root of our perilous predicament, to my mind, is a profound spiritual erisis revealed and accentuated by the Yom Kippur War. Israeli society is being acutely polarised and, worse still, demoralised by ever more bitter divisions on the very ideals which have sustained the spirit of our nation and united us in all our past tribulations.We are now paying a fearful price for the lack of a spiritual faith amongst 30 many of Israel's children.
