Letter to Moses Feuerstein about the JDC in India (1961)

Dear Moe: I am acknowledging receipt of your two most recent letters, the first a reminder about the J.D.C. in India and the second a request for someone to represent the Union in the U.N. committee. Let me say first of all that if the United States missile program were as well-scheduled as your missive program that we might be getting someplace in international rocketry. Now, concerning the J.D.C. – whatever can possibly be done from America has already been done. I have been corresponding with Gilbert, the J.D.C. man, Manasseh, our president, and Jhirad, our executive director. Whatever other pressures can be put on J.D.C. to work along with us will have to wait until Rabbi Jung’s return sometimes next week.With regard to the U.N, committee, I am not quite sure what is needed, nor why a man of financial means is necessary for this task. Letter to Moses Feuerstein about Correspondence on the Status of the Bene Israel (1961)

Dear Moe: Enclosed you will find my correspondence with Rabbi Sherer of the Agudah. This should give you some idea of the explosive, and potentially scandalized situation which is now being created in Israel. I talked to Dr. Weiss this morning and urged him to cable Rabbi Nissim and Unterman. I also asked Rabbi Charles Weinberg to send cables to these two people encouraging them to stand fast against all pressure to change their decision.We are to meet, p.G., on December 6th. I feel we may have to take very decisive action, I therein agreeing to Rabbi Ika going at once, or producing someone from the States. There is very little that can be done until then, and even then it may be necessary for someone to be in Israel to investigate the whole thing at first hand.Sincerely yours,RABBI NORMAN LAMM

Letter to Moses Feuerstein about the Visit of Israeli Rabbis and Delicate Situation in India (1963)

Dear Moe: I did not want to call you personally about the Indian situation, as you had requested of me, until you read the enclosed letter, as well as the photocopy of Jhirad’s letter of the same date to Dr. Weiss, which the latter is sending to you. I think that the situation is extremely delicate, and threatens to deteriorate unless someone with a strong hand is present on the spot when the Israeli Rabbis arrive. I am not going to answer this letter until you have called re and we shall core to some decision. Please don't hesitate. Sincerely, Rabbi Norman Lamm
