Letter to R. Joseph Baumol about Fundraising for Integration of Russian Immigrants in Israel (1972)

Dear Yush: I am only barely beginning to emerge from under the work I found waiting for me upon my return. I have not spared any effort thus far with regard to Russian Jewry. I already have some minor funds and at least one major contribution coming in for our project. This major contribution will be enough to sponsor one coordinator for one year. The money ($6,000) is being given to me by Max Stern. Jesselson will give me 15,000. I asked him to make it out to Kalman and mail to him directly. My questions are as follows: 1. Have you and Kalman decided upon an organizational name for me to send the checks to? When I hear from you, I will mail the Stern check and other minor amounts to you. (Jesselson is separate). 2. Have you managed somehow to coordinate with the other groups here with Moe Feuerstein and me? Frankly, I am not concerned so much with the question of coordination, only that we not be accused of ineffectualism or ineffective sources. But I do not want to get involved and be accused of back-sliding after having met at that group the Moe’s effort at the King David hotel. Incidentally, I just heard from Moe that the money he is arranging with Stern is not to be used for us. That being the case, and since he does not like to hear the checks come in “credited” with our names, I would like to send the checks on when I get them and then add the name but not have it “credited” with it, so that the other groups will have no complaints against me. Meanwhile, I am enclosing here the following: 1. A check for $110 made out to you. I do not know what this is for, but I will explain its genesis: I received in yesterday’s mail an envelope from Naomi, and without explanation, a check signed by Shloime Leifer on behalf of Congregation Tifereth Israel in Forest Hills. The check is dated November 8, 1971. Since the sum is relatively small, I am taking the risk of sending it in your personal name. 2. Letter to Max Stern about Scholarships to Stern College for Soviet Immigrants (1973)

Dear Mr. Stern: In accordance with your suggestion I today called Dean Mirsky and asked him to arrange for the two Russian girls to be permitted to attend Stern College, pending your handling of the matter. The two young ladies are [redacted] and [redacted]. It took a great deal of effort to persuade them to enrol in the College, but they were accepted on their own merits. We have been able to arrange with a private foundation to pay up to $700 for each student. This money will be forthcoming towards the end of the first semester. Letter from Max Stern to Ernest Michel about NYANA and Soviet Jewry Integration (1974)

Dear Ernie: It was really a pleasure to talk with you and I am glad you see that the way NYANA is handling the offices has been outmoded. It is important that we will do a better job and certainly save money by looking for someone able to be in charge of NYANA as soon as possible. I mentioned to you that the person should be religious so that he may understand all types of Jews. Believe me, it was very nice to receive a report from Mr. Schwarzschild in detail, and I know that unfortunately this situation has been the same for a long, long time. For your information, more than 60 Russian children are attending Day Schools. A change must take place as quickly as possible. Please see to it. Sincerely, Max Stern
