Letter to Moses Feuerstein about Sponsoring a Cantor-Teacher and Distributing Torah Sermons for India (1961)

Dear Moe: I have already seen the letter from Penkar to which you refer. At the meeting of the Overseas Commission last Thursday night, we decided to make good on my promise to the towns of Pen and Panvel that we would sponsor the salary of a cantor-teacher full-time for each congregation at the magnanimous sum of $250.00 per year for each. Insofar as the repairs and whitewashing of the building, I think that can wait until more important matters are disposed of. We may tell them that we are ״considering" it.The "sermon" suggestion by Penkar is something that I have heard all over India. They are vary anxious to hear, see and read sermons by American rabbis. I would suggest that we give them the R.C.A. Manual and ask them to choose what they wish for dissemination. The trouble is, however, that a good deal of the material contained therein, in addition to not always being first rate, is not necessarily relevant to the condition and temperament of Indian Jewry.A number of people have expressed a desire to have movies of a rabbi delivering the talk at the same time that a sound track projects his voice. They impressed upon me time and again the fact that this will make the teaching of Torah more real to them.Sorry, you were ill for our last meeting. Letter from M.H. Jacob about Support for Bombay Community (1961)

My Dear Rabbi Lamm, Your letter was received with great joy and I had the privilege of reading it to the congregation who were present at Beth Talmud Torah for Mosaye Shabath Prayers. They were all delighted to receive your good wishes and blessings and they all joined in and pronounced ״Hashem Yishmereyhoo,״ May He Bless You and Your Family with Good Health, Happiness and Long Life. Please forgive me for not replying earlier as I was very busy for the past 2 weeks.Dear Rabbi, although it is 2 months since you left Bombay,I can still hear your melodious voice ringing in my ear.! must admit that your last farewell lecture at the "Kneset Eliyahoo Synagogue״ was very touching, and you have charmed the audience with your memorable words which cannot be forgotten for many days to come.On behalf of the members and students of Beth Talmud Torah please accept my gratitude and thanks for all the kind assistance promised by you to our institution. Letter to Van Kardish Soliciting Donation for Indian Jewry from Fort Tryon Jewish Center (1961)

Dear Mr. Kardish: Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of being introduced by you to an audience at the Ft. Tryon Jewish Center, whom I addressed on the theme of "The Jews of India." As you will recall, following the lecture, without any prompting by me, a number of men and women approached me and asked what they could do, both individually and collectively, for our fellow Jews in India. I mentioned that they might contribute $250.00, which would be enough to support a Hazzan-Teacher for the village of Pen where the poor Bone Israels, many of whm are rice farmers, desperately need a teacher and someone to conduct services for them. Your people accepted with alacrity and premised to undertake this project.I have since notified the people in Pen that they may expect assistance from you. I do hope that you and the good people of Ft. Tryon Jewish Center have not forgotten about this.
