Letter to Rebecca Green about Talmud Study Technique and Memorization (1972)

Dear Rebecca: I tried calling you before you left for Israel, but could not reach you; hence this letter to you in Israel. Your father told me this morning that you had noticed the essential חידוש of my דרשה לשבת הגדול in the רא״ה לסנהדרין. For you to do so, and to remember it in order to apply it – is a sign of a perceptive student who both knows Talmudic technique and has a retentive memory. I congratulate you on both and hope you will keep it up. Excellent! My best regards, and those of Mrs. Lamm and our children, to your parents and your brother and sister, and warmest wishes for and a safe trip back to New York. Cordially, Rabbi Norman Lamm

Letter to R. Berkovits about Article Draft (1975)

Dear Dr. Berkovitz: Thank you very much for sending me the draft of your newest article. Because of the importance of the subject, I do not want to comment until I have had a chance to study it further. My first reading leaves me impressed once again with the boldness of your efforts and the sweep of your concern. However, with such intellectual daring come risks, and I do want to think through the problem a bit further before offering my comments. Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm Chancellor Yeshiva University 500 West 185th Street New York, NY 10033 USA Dear Rabbi Lamm: I cannot adequately express how honored I feel that you have accepted the position of Honorary President of Nishmat for three years. As you know, Yehuda and I are great admirers of your writing and your wisdom. Your kindness and patience in mentoring and assisting me never cease to amaze me. I am profoundly indebted to you for my own education at Yeshiva University, which was such a formative influence upon all I have undertaken subsequently. That you have, because of your passionate Zionut and your marvelous commitment to open the higher reaches of Torah learning and leadership to women, found time to nurture and encourage my work is a source of greatest inspiration to me. As you must certainly know, there are times when such encouragement is particularly welcome... I thank you with all my heart for all you have done for Nishmat.
