Letter to R. Rabinowitz about Planning South Africa Visit (1963)

Dear Rabbi Rabinowitz: I have not heard from you in quite a while, and hope that all is well with you and your family. I thought you might be interested in knowing that I have been invited by the South African Board of Jewish Education to visit the country this coming February, please God. I hope to leave for Johannesburg on February 1st, and return February 25th or 26th. This is one time I truly regret that you are not in your old post of Chief Rabbi of South Africa. It would have been a pleasure to spend three weeks together with you. Meanwhile, if there is anything of a special nature you think I ought to know, would you be good enough, if time permits, to drop me a note and let me know so that I may guide myself accordingly. With all best wishes to Mrs. Rabinowitz and warmest personal regards to all our mutual friends, Cordially yours, Rabbi Norman Lamm.

Letter to Relatives of R. Lamm Describing His South Africa Itinerary (1964)

The Itinerary for Rabbi Lamm is as follows: Leaving New York on Feb. 1st at 10:00 P.M. by El Al, Flight #272. On Feb. 2nd from 10:00 A.M. to 10:30 P.M., he will be staying in Paris at the Lutetia Hotel - 43 Boulevard Raspail; he is to leave Paris via UAT French Airlines, arriving in Johannesburg at 11:25 A.M. Feb. 3rd. On Feb. 10th and 11th, he will be at the Krueger National Park; Wed, Feb. 19th at Pretoria; Thursday, Feb. 20th - Durban; Sunday, Feb. 23rd - Port Elisabeth. His return trip calls for him to leave Johannesburg on Feb. 25th via UAT, and to spend the evening of Feb. 25th in Paris, leaving February 26th at 10:00 A.M. via Air France and arriving in New York at noon that day. Please note the following time difference: Paris is five hours later than New York and South Africa is six hours later than New York. His address in Johannesburg will be: Rabbi Norman Lamm, Wynton-Joy Hotel, Catherine Avenue Corner Kapteijn Street, Hillbrow, Johannesburg, Union of South Africa. In case of emergency, the following address may also be used: Mr. A. Letter to R. Abner Weiss about Possible Visit to Israel and South Africa (1969)

Dear Abner: I was delighted to receive a New Year’s card from you and your wife, and both my wife and I gladly reciprocate your good wishes for a happy and healthy year and a G’mar Tov. I have been inquiring from mutual friends about your welfare in Durban, although I have little doubt that you will succeed gloriously. I must tell you that I very much enjoyed your company when we did meet in the States, and I look forward to further meetings. As a matter of fact, I would like to make a suggestion, or a request, and hope that you will keep it confidential except insofar as you can possibly be of assistance to me.A mutual friend of ours, who shall meanwhile remain nameless, planted an idea in my mind which gradually developed into something that is either a stroke of genius or utterly scatterbrained. I hope you will feel free to give me your honest judgment.The idea is this. I am anxious to do something else in the summer, other than stay in Camp Morasha. I am anxious to visit Israel, especially this summer where a nephew of mine is celebrating his Bar Mitzvah on July 4th and also would be happy to make another visit to South Africa.The idea would be to accept some of the "feelers" that have been put out to me as to whether I would like to visit South Africa again. Frankly, I do not want to come as a professional fundraiser, being taken around to the homes of various prospective contributors and twisting their arms. Nor would I want to go through the same hectic pace I did last time for six weeks.Rather, I wonder if it would be possible to give a series of lectures, perhaps tied in with the campaign of some institution like the Yeshiva College or Board of Education, which, of course, can use my visit as part of its annual campaign. This should be a one-week or ten-day affair. The remainder of the time would be spent in ministering on Saturdays (including, of course, Friday nights) to a synagogue in an area where the weather is favorable during July and August. I beli…
