Letter to Van Kardish Soliciting Donation for Indian Jewry from Fort Tryon Jewish Center (1961)

Dear Mr. Kardish: Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of being introduced by you to an audience at the Ft. Tryon Jewish Center, whom I addressed on the theme of "The Jews of India." As you will recall, following the lecture, without any prompting by me, a number of men and women approached me and asked what they could do, both individually and collectively, for our fellow Jews in India. I mentioned that they might contribute $250.00, which would be enough to support a Hazzan-Teacher for the village of Pen where the poor Bone Israels, many of whm are rice farmers, desperately need a teacher and someone to conduct services for them. Your people accepted with alacrity and premised to undertake this project.I have since notified the people in Pen that they may expect assistance from you. I do hope that you and the good people of Ft. Tryon Jewish Center have not forgotten about this. Letter from Haham Gaon about Difficulties Finding a Rabbi for India (1962)

My dear Rabbi, I am sorry that I did not answer your letter of October 2nd before, but I have been trying to see whether a qualified Orthodox Rabbi, preferably Sephardi, could be found here who would be ready to go to Bombay. Unfortunately, my search has not been successful at all. I agree with you that unless something is done with the Indian Community in Bombay, we shall entirely lose this community. The problem of Bene-Israel is no better, and I have spoken to some members of that community who have come to see me. They still feel very embittered about the treatment that the Bene-Israel are receiving in Israel.As you probably know, I hope to be in New York some time at the beginning of November, and then I shall be able to discuss with you this whole problem in a personal way.With all best wishes and taking this opportunity of wishing you all a very Happy New Year,Yours as ever, Haham

לכבוד ידידי מכובדי הר"נ לאם שליט"א, שלום וברכה וכטו"ס, סלח נא ומחל לי על האיחור והעיכוב בכתיבתי אליך. כמה סיבות לדבר, ואעפי' שכבות הן אפרטם לפניך כסדרן: א. בדרכי מארה"ב נתעכבתי עוד כשבועיים באירופה. ב. מכתבך השני הגיעני למחרת שובי ולא הספקתי לפגוש את אנשי ועד בנ"י עד השבוע. ג. הדרך מיעטה את כוחותי, שיבשה את סדרי יומי ומהלך עבודתי. מה גם שנצטבור לי עכימת עבודה וענינים שונים שהשארתי בימי העדרי מן הארץ.
