ידידי מכובד, הרב הגאון המצויין והמופלא והרב מוהר"נ שליט"א שלום וברכה! השתדלתי להשיגו ע"י הטלפון ולא הצלחתי בזה. ובימים אלו שכולנו עמוסים ומטורדין מבית ומחוץ…חשבתי רק לכתוב לו בקצרה להביע בקשתי: האם יכול מתי לגבל טופס ממה שכתב כת"ר בענין חסידות – חב"ד והטתיצותה לס' נפש-החיים וכו'? אנני יודע בדונך אם נגרמת רשומה זו, ולכך מצי גורא לה בשמה הנכון, אך אם יוכל כ"ת להודיענו עד' אפשרותו להשיג תופס זה – אהיה מאד אסיר תודה. (כמובן, אף זה עולה בנסף אראה – בלנ' – לשלף כס' אשר ישית עלי).

לכבוד עמיתי הדגול מרבבה האי גברא רבה ויקירא דרופתקא דאורייתא אנפירון נמטייה לראש ישיבתנו הקדושה ונשיאה הרה"ג ר' נחום לאם שליט"א אחדשוכ"ט, הידד ויישר חילו לאורייתא על ספרו המפליא בכל מובן על החסידות שהו"ל בימים אלה ואשר הואיל בטובו הגדול לשלוח לי את הנכס הדגול והחשוב הזה. הן כתוכנו ובסגנונו הצח, הן בהקפו ובשלמותו ובשליטתו על החומר הוא גישם במדה נדירה מאד את הפתגם של חז"ל, "חזקה על חבר שאינו מוציא מתחת ידו דבר שאינו מתוקן."

Letter from Dr. Berger about Chabad and Messianism

Dear Dr. Lamm, thank you very much for sending this book. The material is particularly instructive for its absence of any reference to the Rebbe’s Messianship despite the fact that the author believes in it be-emunah shelemah. Thus, this is a good example of the approach of the Lubavitch moderates, who genuinely accept the Rebbe’s physical death, believe that he will certainly be the Messiah, and oppose any public indications of this belief. For an explicit affirmation by Kahan of all these positions, see the enclosed, which was written, as best I can tell, a few years after the Rebbe’s death. See especially pp. 13-14 (sections 12-13), 19-21 (section 17). Needless to say, anyone reading the material that you sent me in isolation would say that we have here a major Lubavitch thinker who discusses the redemption without any reference to the Rebbe’s Messianship and can therefore be presumed not to believe in it.
