Letter from Dr. Weiss to Abraham Jhirad about the Halachic Permissibility of Using an Old Cemetery for New Graves (1961)

To: Mr. A.D. Jhirad, From: Dr. Samson R. Weiss, Subject: Addition to Old Cemetery. Concerning your inquiry about the use of the old cemetary for additional graves, please be informed that Rabbi Lamm discussed this matter with the appropriate Halachic authorities who agreed with him on the following ruling: You state that the average height of the coffin is 15 to 18 inches. Therefore, the same height of additional earth must be placed on top of the old cemetary. Then, new graves may be placed on this cemetary by virtue of this additional layer of soil.cc: Rabbi Norman Lamm

Letter to Abraham Penkar about His Son Keeping a Nazirite Vow (1962)

Dear Mr. Penkar: When I was in India last February I had the pleasure of having your young son Barkhiel introduced to me as the youngster who was keeping the Nazirite vow. I took a picture of him and showed it to a number of my friends. I was told in India that Bene Israel children who are Nazirites generally cut their hair at a ceremony accompanied by a family feast. One of the people who saw Barkhiel’s photo expressed a desire to participate in this family feast as a friend – from the distance. He has therefore asked me to send to you the enclosed check for $10.00 so as to make this ceremony possible for his son. Please accept my best wishes for a happy and peaceful Passover holiday, and give my best regards to Barkhiel and to his sister who took care of him when he visited me. Letter from Abraham Jhirad to Dr. Samson Weiss about OU Budget for Indian Jewry and Halachic Questions (1964)

Dear Mr. Weiss, Whilst submitting the Annual Receipt & Payment Statement, I offer my sincere apologies for the inordinate delay. A budget for the year 1964 has not been prepared because there is no new expected income or expenditure. The one submitted for the year 1963 could be considered good for this year as well. My Executive looks forward to receiving your Overseas Commission’s continued support for all our activities. Taking advantage of this opportunity, I am forwarding herewith an application from [redacted] for admission for Rabbinate. He is the student recommended for training in an American Yeshiva. A copy of [redacted]’s letter to Rabbi Lamm should give you an idea of his academic qualifications, etc.There's another of our students, [redacted], who has secured admission for higher studies in the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, and two other universities. It will be very much appreciated if you could let me know at your earliest if this student, who is Orthodox by conviction, can receive financial or other assistance from the UOJCA. If this is out of the UOJCA's field, could you recommend some other institution?Following are a few questions on which we would like to have the RCA's rulings, preferably with reference to the Torah or later Rabbinic authority:Can an unmarried woman, who has remained pregnant, be married before the confinement to the man by whom she has remained pregnant? If so, can such a marriage be performed in a Synagogue?A child who has not reached maturity (Boy 13 and Girl 12) — can he or she be converted to Judaism? If so, is it necessary to inform the convert on reaching the age of maturity that he or she had been converted and take his or her consent?Can a woman recite the Kaddish in public if there is no such near relative to do so?If a woman leaves the shelter of her husband’s home and is not heard of definitely, after what period can divorce proceedings be initiated?
