Letter of Recommendation to Dr. Benjamin Brickman for Ramaz Teaching Application (1963)

My Dear Dr. Brickman: I have just learned that you have interviewed [redacted] for a teaching position in Ramaz. I know [redacted], and have had some contact with him the last few years. His reputation as a teacher precedes him, and from my personal contact with him I know him to be a man of integrity and honor. He has taught in Manhattan Day School, and I believe in Boston. [redacted] is a real scholar, and I think he will find his niche in Ramaz, and that, especially under your expert guidance, he will be a valuable asset to the Ramaz faculty. These remarks are, of course, unsolicited, nevertheless I hope you will take them in the spirit in which they are given. I look forward to meeting with you a bit more elaborately than the casual encounters we have had in the past several years while entering or leaving C.K.J. Letter to the Memorial Foundation of Jewish Culture Recommending Doctoral Student's Grant Application (1972)

Gentlemen: I am sending you enclosed the biographical sketch of [redacted] who is anxious to obtain a grant to study for his doctorate in Yale. I shall be writing to the applicant, advising him to file a formal application with the Foundation. I appreciate that the deadline has passed for grants for 1972–1973, but this is a special case in that the applicant is a Yemenite. Considering the paucity of Oriental Jewish scholars in Israel, and the social and political tensions about this question, it may perhaps be wise to waive your formal rules in this case. Letter to R. Aberman Recommending Young Woman with Little Jewish Education for Michlalah (1972)

Dear Reuven: There is an old Yiddish saying about not sending a cat to fetch the milk. But since מכללה does its instruction in Hebrew rather than in English, I shall violate this choice piece of folk wisdom and, despite the fact that my own daughter is applicant for your next year’s school, I shall write a recommendation for somebody else. [redacted] is a young lady who is now a freshman at Stern College. She is hereself a בעלת תשובה in the sense that her family is nowheres near as observant as she is. She did attend Yeshiva High School of Queens and spent a year in מכון גולד. She is still dissatisfied with her present level of Jewish learning and is quite apprehensive about passing the exam that you will set for her. I am therefore writing to intervene on her own behalf. I would certainly be the last one to want the school to lower its standards. However, I have observed that this young lady has by sheer force of will and determination transcended the limitations imposed upon her by her environment, and I therefore am fully confident that even if normal standards she is not presently capable as a student, nevertheless, her native abilities are such that she is eminently worthy of consideration of qualifying acceptance.Do make every effort to extend to her every possible courtesy, and please accept my thanks in advance.Cordially,Rabbi Norman LammNL:cwP.S.
