Letter from R. Jakobovits to Ronald Misheiker Suggesting that R. Lamm Visit South Africa (1963)

Dear Mr. Misheikers: I am deeply appreciative of the honor done to me by your Board in inviting me to visit your community for your Jewish Education Campaign early in 1964. It would have given me very great pleasure indeed to avail myself of this opportunity to pay my first visit to South Africa and to meet its outstanding Jewish community. But after the most careful consideration, and following consultation with my officers, I find that it will regrettably be impossible for me to contemplate a protracted absence from New York during the next winter and spring season, particularly since I was only six months ago absent on a month's lecture tour in England. The period between Rosh Hashanah and Pesach is the busiest in our congregational calendar, and as we have no assistant Rabbi, many of our activities would grind to a standstill during my absence. I wonder, however, whether it would be of any help to you if I suggested to you an alternative visitor who might be agreeable to accepting the assignment. The Rabbi I have in mind is Rabbi Norman Lamm, the distinguished Associate Rabbi of the Jewish Center (131 West 86th street, New York City), our sister congregation in New York. He is a splendid speaker and enjoys a nation-wide reputation as one of the outstanding scholars and lecturers in the American Orthodox Rabbinate. His name may be familiar to you as the first editor of Tradition, now the leading Rabbinical magazine in this country. He has also had some invaluable foreign experience, notably through his important mission to the Jewish communities in India on behalf of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America a few years ago. I have no doubt that his messages would be received with great acclaim by all his audiences.I hope I may look forward to some future occasion for such a visit. Letter of Gratitude to Dr. Barnett for Hospitality in Johannesburg (1964)

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Barnett, Now that I have returned to my home and beginning to readjust to my normal routine, I want to write to you to express to you from the very bottom of my heart, my deepest gratitude and utmost appreciation for all your kindness to me during my stay in Johannesburg. All the friends I made in Johannesburg, I am glad that they are many, the two of you are the ones who extended yourselves most to offer me warm friendship and cordial hospitality. I shall never forget the trips to Krueger Park and to the Mines for the War Dances to which you so kindly accompanied me. In general, the two of you, and Jeffrey, made these several weeks an altogether unforgettable experience. I hope that my wife and I shall have an opportunity to reciprocate in some measure when you come to New York as you promised you would. With special regard to the request to trace a relative who once lived in St. Louis, Mo., I suggest that you send me the name and all the information you have about him. I then will try my best to see if his whereabouts can be located. Letter of Gratitude to Ernest Horwitz about His Assistance in South Africa (1964)

Dear Mr. Horwitz: Although I have sent you regards through others, I do want to take the time to write to you personally to tell you how very much I appreciated all your advice and assistance during my stay in Johannesburg. I shall value your friendship for a long time to come. Before leaving for New York, Mr. H. Gordon asked me to give regards to Dr. Harry Miller of Mt. Sinai Hospital. You added your regards to his wife, your niece. I am sorry that I have not been able to locate the Millers. Mt. Sinai has no such Doctor on their staff. I should be glad to give them the regards from you and Mr. Gordon, if you could notify me where to reach them. Please give my fondest regards to Mr. Gordon and to all my dear friends of the Board of Jewish Education and the rest of the Jewish community. My best wishes for a Happy and Kosher Passover.
