ב"ה י"ג תמוז תשכ"ח כוס תנחומין וברכת נחמה לידידי החשוב כמר יואל נ"י. מה מאד הצטערתי לשמוע הנורא והמזעזע על הלקח ממך אביך היקר ז"ל בעודכם בתוך שנת האבל לאמכם המנוחה ע"ה! ממש תסמרנה שערות הראש, ואין בפי מילים לנחמך, ואולי טובה השתיקה בכגון זה. רק זה דע לך, יואל ידידי, בתוך האבל הכבד הזה, שאין לך אדם מישראל שאין לו גואל, ובפרט שמדובר באדם כמותך ובבת יקרה כאחותך היקרה והחשובה תחי'. חבריך ומוקירך יעמדו לימינך תמיד. ואם רק יש משהו שאוכל אנוכי הקטן לעשות בשבילך, אנא ואנא אל תהסס לדרוש ממני. רעיתי משתתפת אתי בברכת הנחומים אליכם. המקום ינחם אתכם בתוך שאר אבלי ציו"ר. שלך נחום לאם

מה מאוד נדהמנו, אני ורעיתי, לשמע הרע והמר של פטירת בנך החביב והיקר מוהר"ר יעקב ז"ל שנקטף בדמי חייו. זכורני שכשהיינו בירושלים לפני כחדשיים התחדשנו בשמרה משמחת על החלמתו, והנה באה לנו שמועה מרה זו וכיסתה את שמי יהדות אמריקה הנאמנה בקבר וערפל. אין מלים בפי לומר לכב' הרבנית את גורל הכבוד אשר כולנו מרגישים איש אלפי אנשים מתלחשים מל הפרל והשדר בהלקח מאותו – מוות כל האומה הנדווחל הן גולה – אותו גוון זעיר שהיה לשם את הילה לכאנו, ורפוט ליהדרת התורה.
