מע״כ ידידי הרה״ג ר׳ נ. דר. לאם נ״י, שלום וברכה! אפנה לזה לידידי אישית ותקותי שלא ישיב פני ריקם. גם השנה יש לנו מספר תלמידים עניים וחוסרי אמצעים, אבל מצוינים גדולים בתורה, הצריכים לעזרה למאן יוכלו לקבל חופשה הבראה בעונה בין הזמנים בקביעה סדרי לימוד כרגיל. צריכים כאלה אינם בכלל תקציב הישיבה, ולכן הוכרחתי לקבל הדבר על עצמי כתוב אישי. כדי לאסוף סכום של ח״י מאות דולר, עלי, לבד תרומתי האישית, לפנות ממספר מצומצם של ידידי ולבקשם להיות לי לעזר בענין גדול זה.

Letter from Yehoshua Schachter about Donation to Institute for Judaism and Contemporary Thought (1973)

Dear Rabbi Lamm: Many thanks for your letter of April 26th. It is indeed very kind of you to offer us your help and under the circumstances it is very badly needed. Mr. Jesselson contributed 7500 dollars last year, and this is the sum we are seeking. I should add that other donors were much less generous; in general, donations ranged from 1000-2000 dollars. Prof. Fisch and myself still hope you will be able to attend this year's Institute. We would be very happy to meet you again soon. We are rather concerned about the lack of progress in the matter of the Presidency. Yeshiva University – Office of the President September 2, 1990 / 12 Elul 5750 Dear Students: Welcome to Yeshiva University! It is a personal pleasure to present you with a copy of Torah Umadda: The Encounter of Religious Learning and Worldly Knowledge in the Jewish Tradition as my gift to you. This book was written more for you, my students, than for any other group within the Jewish and academic community. It reflects my commitment to the basic truth we hold so dear at Yeshiva – that the ben and bat Torah must encounter and struggle with the issues raised by our study of the secular even as we are fully immersed in and guided by the world of the Torah. I know that during your years with us, you will frequently and unavoidably be confronted by Torah Umadda issues. Do not shy away from them. Meet them head on with the help of your rabbis and teachers as well as your colleagues and schoolmates. I pray that my book, which is not the end of your search but part of the beginning, will help you in your intellectual and spiritual quests. Most of all, may you have siata di’shemaya in all your undertakings.
