Letter to Registrar about Format of Ph.D. Dissertation (1964)

Dear Prof. Silverman: I would hereby like to make an official request of you to permit a slight change in the format of my forthcoming dissertation for the Bernard Revel Graduate School. Instead of having the footnotes placed at the bottom of the page together with the text, I would prefer to be permitted to keep the text and footnotes separate. The reason for this is the great number of “broken” lines of Hebrew and English which will be confined to the footnotes, and which will therefore make inordinately technical demands in the typing if I were to follow the stated procedure.Thank you very much.Sincerely,RABBI NORMAN LAMM

Letter to Naava Frank about Not Being Able to Attend Her Graduation (1976)

Dear Naava: Mrs. Lamm and I and the children were delighted to receive your invitation to attend the commencement exercises at the Hebrew Academy when you will be graduated on June 15th. You can well understand how pleased we would be were we able to come – all of us! It would have been a special occasion of joy for us, because we would so want to join your family at this significant occasion. Unfortunately, however, June is an extremely busy month for all of us, and there is just no way that I can make it – especially because I must perform a wedding for very dear friends on the same evening, here in New York. However, we do want you to know that we will be with you in spirit, that we are very proud of your achievements, and that we hope and pray that yours will be a long life of great achievements in all ways, and especially as a great Jewess. May your future development, and that of your sisters, be such that you will bring great joy to your mother and grandparents, and that all you do and are will reflect glory upon the memory of your sainted father. We are sending enclosed a little token of our affection and regard for you. Please give our love to Mother and to your sisters, and best wishes for Cordially yours, Rabbi Norman Lamm
