Exchange with Minister Ben-Meir about the Israeli National Religious Party Leadership (1973)

Dear Yehudah: As you well know, I have rarely intervened in the political matters of the NRP save to offer my assistance to you and Zevulun whenever I was able to. I have every intention of remaining consistent in my policy of non-interference. However, I have received a request from Aaron Cohen to write to you and Zevulun about his efforts to be #3 man in the forthcoming elections. Quite frankly, I know and like his major rival for that post, and consider myself incompetent to decide between them. However, I do wish to state that I have known Aaron for a number of years and have always found him to be a sympathetic and fine person. Unquestionably, it would be important as well to have some non-Ashkenazi representation in the upper echelon of the עיער. With this I have come as close to the brink of intervention as I care, and hasten to wish you and your wife and children, as well as Zevulun and his family a חג שמח. Cordially, RABBI NORMAN LAMM

Letter from Aharon Kohen about Israeli National Religious Party Elections (1973)

ידידי פרופ' לאם, מן הקטע הרצ״ב תבין שהתחילה כבר המערכה בחוגי הצעירים לקראת הבחירות לכנסת. אני מוצא זאת לנכון לפנות לידידי ובניהם גם אתה, שיפעילו השפעתם על זבולון ויהודה בנושא זה. אודה לך אם תמצא זמן לכתוב להם כמה שורות בענין הזה ותודתי מסורה לך מראש. ד״ש חמה למשפחה. שלך בהוקרה, אהרן כהן. אהרן כהן – רחוב ריינס 5, קרית משה. ירושלים 95427. סכסוך חמור יפרוץ בין צעירי – המפד״ל. רוב פעילי ״חוג הצעירים״ יעמדו על כך כי המועמד השלישי של ה״צעירים״ לכנסת השמינית – נוסף על סגן – השר זבולון המר ועל ח״כ ד״ר יהודה בן – מאיר – יהיה מר אהרן כהן, שהוא כיום חבר המרכז – העולמי של ״המזרחי והפועל המזרחי״, בעוד שכמה מאנשי – המנגנון ינסו לדחות את כהן למקום הרביעי. אהרן כהן הוא מוותיקי ״חוג הצעירים״ וכל נסיון לפגוע במעמדו יעורר זעם בין השורה ובין ראשי הפעילים. המפד״ל לא תצמצם את פעילותה רק לנושאי דת ולענייני הצביון המסורתי שלה, אלא תעורר גם בעיות חברתיות ונושאים אחרים הנוגעים לכלל הציבור. תכנית זו מתגבשת בימים אלה במסע – הבחירות של המפלגה הדתית – לאומית. המפד״ל התחייבה לא לנוח ולא לשקוט עד שימצאו כל הדרכים לתיקון פגימות פני הדברים. בדיונים הפנימיים במסע – הבחירות בלט נציג – הצעירים אהרן כהן – מוסמך האוניברסיטה בספרות עברית, המקדיש את זמנו לצמצום הפער החברתי – שיופיע, כנראה, במקום השלישי מטעם סיעת – הצעירים ברשימת המפלגה לכנסת השמינית. הצרה היא רק שמקום זה ייקבע בעשירייה השנייה של המועמדים – מקום בלתי בטוח כלל לנוכח תוצאות סקרי דעת הקהל שנערכים באחרונה. בהתייחסו לסקרים אלה אמר ראש מטה – הבחירות של המפלגה, שר – הסעד מר מיכאל חזני: ״כל הנבואות השחורות שמנבאים לנו עורכי סקרים למיניהם וההתקפות של הימין הקיצוני ינחתו עלינו – ישיגו תוצאה הפוכה. כפי שכבר נאמר: כאשר יענו אותו כן ירבה וכן יפרוץ״.
