Letter from R. Joseph Lookstein about Meeting Regarding the Mikvah's Financial Distress (1971)

My dear Norman: We are all busy people. But busy people always find time when they so desire it. I beg you to find time for a meeting that I am calling, and which will take place on Monday, May 24th, at 8:30P.M., at the home of Mr. Charles Bendheim, 101 Central Park West. The matter that I would like to bring before you is a very urgent one. It has to do with the one Mikvah that we have in our entire area - from the Lower East Side up to Washington Heights. It is regrettable that this fundamental institution of Jewish life is struggling for existence in our community. I am sure that all of us are anxious to save it and to secure it for the future. That is the reason for the meeting - to consult with you and to decide with you what should be done. Please indicate on the enclosed card that you are planning to attend and I thank you in advance for your affirmative answer. Very cordially yours, Joseph H. Lookstein

Letter to Charles Bendheim about Jewish Center Annual Mikvah Contribution (1973)

Dear Charlie; I am sorry that it took us so long to remit the $1,000 for the Mikvah, but I am pleased finally to be able to send you that amount enclosed, on behalf of The Jewish Center. As I explained to you, we preferred to raise the money by voluntary assessment added to our dues bill. Since our bills go out on January 2, it was not possible to send the check until today. Letter from R. Joseph Lookstein to Barry Eisenberg about Financial Support for the Mikvah (1975)

My dear Barry: I have your letter of January 21, 1975, which I turned over to the counsel of the Wurzweiler Foundation. He will probably be in touch with you. The Wurzweiler Foundation is anxious to be cooperative and helpful. I am afraid, however, that the offer that you made is hardly acceptable. Incidentally, it does not entirely conform to the discussion held in my office on December 27, 1974 in the presence of your dear father-in-law and my good friend Charlie Bendheim. You will undoubtedly be hearing from our lawyer soon, and I hope that you will prove as cooperative as we are anxious to prove helpful. Very cordially yours, Joseph H. Lookstein.
