Letter from R. Jakobovits about "Halachot Vahalichot" (1991)

At this point, Rabbi Jakobovits was Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom. The two maintained a close friendship dating back to their time as pulpit rabbis in Manhattan. Halachot VeHalichot is Rabbi Lamm’s first compendium of Talmudic essays, published in 1992.

Dear Dr. Lamm: Regarding your shiur Wednesday night on הוכח תוכיח, which I thoroughly enjoyed, I checked the Sefer Hamitzvot (מ"ע ר"ה) and there, too, found your “two dinim.” First, Rambam presents the classic הוכח תוכיח (parts 2 + 3 of the pasuk, as you explained), and then adds: “ונכנס בציווי הזה” … which seems to be a reference to the first mitzvah (parts 1 + 2 of the pasuk), also part of הוכח תוכיח . I’ve enclosed two translations of the Sefer Hamitzvot. Thanks again, JJ Schacter.
