לכבוד עמיתי הדגול מאד, מורם מהעם, ה"ה הרה"ג ר' נחום לאם שליט"א ראש ישיבתנו הקדושה ונשיאה, מאד התרשמתי ממאמרו שהודפס ב-Newsday על מצבה ר"ל של אמו היקרה תח', שלא עלינו סובלת ממחלת "אל תשליכנו לעת זקנה" המכונה Alzeimer's. היא קינה הנובעת מהשתפכות נפשו הרמה והדוקרת את החוט המשותף המקשר אותנו כולנו. ה' ירחם! גם השוואתו בין המחלה המענה את היחיד והמחלה המענה את הציבור היא נפלאה, לדאבוננו הגדול, באמיתתה ובהתפטותה.אני תפלה שה"א-ל מלך רופא נאמן" ישלח לאמו ב"ה ומנב"ת תח' רפואת הנפש ורפואת הגוף, וגם לכולנו בתור ציבור ובתור יחידים.נא לימסור ד"ש לבבית בשמנו לאביו הגדול שיח'.בברכת כל טוב,ובהוקרה ובהערצה,זבולון חרל"פWhat Have We Forgotten?By Norman LammI am grateful my mother still recognizes me. She may not do so for long, but right now her face lights up when she sees me. My children have less luck; she seems to feel she ought to know them, so she pretends she does. We all see through the act. Her great-grandchildren are another story. She is repeatedly astonished that they even exist.Like most of others on her floor, she lives in her remote past, both sustained and terrorized by long buried pleasures and fears, loves and hates. She often calls for her mother, and mourns her "recently" deceased parents with genuine grief. Soon these memories, too; will be forgotten, as her malevolent disease destroys more and more of her brain cells. And then all the past will be a blank.The family is helpless to do anything about it. My father and my siblings give her all our love and care, but that is simply not enough. That is the way Alzheimer's disease goes. The patient has no recollected past, and no conception of or interest in the future. Only the present counts. It is, as someone said, a radically existential situation. My sadness at Mom's condition and sense of futility, despite the family's best efforts, are deepened by a suspicion that her sickness is somehow a a metaphor for our culture. for a good part of modernity itself.To live for now, without knowing the value of the past and t…

Letter from R. Haskel Lookstein about Bikkur Cholim Lecture (1996)

Dear Norman: Kudos to you for the marvelous shiur-lecture on the meaning of bikur cholim. I received it in the mail from the Coordinating Council. What a marvelous presentation! The halakhic discussions, the development of differences of opinion and nuance between various authorities, and then the etymological analysis of the word bikur – it was all a model of how a popular shiur ought to be given when you want to get across both the basic concepts and values as well as a reverence for halakha and Jewish sources. But why in heaven’s name did you have to praise Ike Trainin so much at the beginning of the talk? I will never be able to live it down – he will keep reminding me of it all the time.
