Dear Norman: I take this opportunity to express the sincerest thanks and appreciation of C.S.D. of Yeshiva University and our colleagues of the Queens-Nassau Yeshiva University Rabbinic Alumni region for the outstanding manner in which you opened our Adult Education Seminar for synagogue leaders on February 7th, 1966 held at Temple Beth El in Long Beach, New York. Your talk on "The Responsible Layman and his Sense of Destiny" was truly beautiful both in content and delivery. It reflected upon a responsible rabbi who loves his calling and who understands his role and the role of those with whom he works in the upbuilding of Torah life.I have heard many comments from rabbis whose balle-battim attended and during the social mingling of the coffee hour from the laymen themselves, all of whom expressed profound admiration and appreciation for your insights and instruction.Unfortunately, my heavy schedule of field visits and being out of the office so much delayed my conveying to you our thanks. Letter from R. Dobrinsky about Participating in Shimush Program for Young Rabbinical Students (1966)

Dear Rabbi Lamm: I take this opportunity to once again express to you and your family, my best wishes for 5727. May the New Year bring good health, nachas from family and achievements and exciting opportunities to continue the upbuilding of Torah life in the American Jewish community. Because of the high esteem in which you are held in our Rabbinic Alumni ranks, we are inviting you again this year to participate in the Shimush Program. This course which is being implemented due to the leadership and cooperation of the Yeshiva University Rabbinic Alumni will now, for the first time, be an accredited course toward the Masters Degree in the Department of Supplementary Rabbinic Training at Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, Yeshiva University. Each participating student will be assigned to a Metropolitan New York area rabbi, as well as to an out of town rabbi. Essentially, in addition to the Sabbath visitation to your community and home, you would be asked to arrange at mutually convenient times, as the occasions arise, for the student to accompany you when you officiate at religious ceremonies. Our first class session, when a student will be assigned to you, will take place on October 14th, 1966. Until then, I really will not know how many students have registered for the program. I am enclosing, for your general information, the letter that was sent to the students, together with an outline of the requirements they must fulfill within the period of one year.It is of prime importance for all participating rabbis to assist us in evaluating the young semicha students by noting their comments on several evaluation sheets which I will send along to you shortly, together with record sheets upon which we would ask you to kindly record that the student did attend services, preach, accompany you at a funeral, unveiling, wedding etc. These record sheets should be returned to my office so that we may provide the student with credit for the Masters Degree when he has com…

Letter about Halacha Observance and Family Reconciliation (1966)

Dear Rabbi Lamm, I hope you received my letter with a copy of your article. At this time I would like to wish you a G’mar Chasima Tova. I understand that my sister-in-law, [redacted], will meet the Rabbi. I would like you to consider some important details at this meeting: 1) She should not have any misunderstanding that there is a family reconciliation or a partial one, because I helped to bring about this meeting with the Rabbi, it was only done outside of the family relationship, as an outsider.2) The family is not ready to reconcile unless she will live according to the 'eikrim', – Sabbath, kashruth and moral. Because this is the price that the family should forget what she did in the past few years. We feel that she should rather look up to us in these matters.3) I would like to ask the Rabbi a personal favor to meet with her at least one or two more times, after this first meeting.No one in the family has any business with her, but through us this may change, and she may get together with rest of the family on a normal basis.We would appreciate you meeting with her more than the initial meeting, as we have tried everything with her and there is nothing else that we can do.With best wishes for the New Year.Sincerely yours,[redacted]
