Dear Dr. Birnbaum: Many thanks for sending to me a copy of your book, "The Arabic Commentary of Yefet," your doctoral thesis. I hope to read it carefully at the first opportunity. At the same time, permit me to express to you my thanks and those of my entire congregation for your splendid and inspiring talk this past Saturday afternoon, which I am sure encouraged all your listeners to dedicate themselves with renewed interest to both study and teaching of the "Hidden Treasures of Hebrew Literature." Letter to Moses Feuerstein about Declining OU Committee on Law and Legislation Appointment (1964)

Dear Moe: Thank you so much for your call on Monday night referring me to Nat Gross. I was about to call him immediately but something came up of a rather important nature and it was much too late at night to make a respectable call. I therefore hope to contact him later today, or later this week. I appreciate your appointing me to the Committee on Law and Legislation. I remember us having discussed it, but without specific reference to my joining the committee. I hope you will take with good grace my declining your invitation. If I accept any more obligations which require any committee meetings at all, I will have extended myself beyond the point of usefulness for anything that I am presently working on. In addition to all else, I have certain other obligations which I can explain to you personally and all of which force me, however regretfully, to say "no" despite my awareness of the importance of this committee.I hope you will explain this to Reuben Gross so that he will understand it too.My very best to Shirley and the children.Sincerely,RABBI NORMAN LAMM

Letter to R. Schwartz about "Jewish Life" Halachic Editorial Policy (1970)

Dear Elkanah: I hope that my corrections for the "Who Is A Jew" article were acceptable and entered as we had discussed. I look forward to its publication in the near future. My brother has apprised me of the “gilgulim” of his rejoinder to Bleich's review of his book. I must say that I totally and completely fail to understand the editorial policy of Jewish Life. It is inconsistent, self-defeating, and utterly unworthy. I am deeply chagrined at this fearful and self-contradictory attitude which will allow a halakhic critique of a book and then not permit a halakhic rejoinder on the grounds that *Jewish Life* shies away from halakhic issues. If this is to be the considered and final view of the authorities at *Jewish Life*, then I must have been profoundly mistaken in my assessment of its nature and quality.I hope that, simply on the basis of fairness and consistency, the editorial committee will review its decision and thereby allow those of us who have been advocates of and contributors to it to continue their positive support of the magazine.Cordially yours,RABBI NORMAN LAMMNL/
