Letter from Irving Brodsky about the Welfare of Jewish West Side Tenants (1972)

Dear Rabbi Lamm: The Federation of Jewish Philanthropies has requested the research staff of the Associated Ys to undertake a survey of the social and health needs of the Jewish residents of the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and of the community services available to them. The findings of this survey will be used by Federation and its agencies in planning to meet the needs of their present and potential clientele. The geographic area covered by this survey is as follows: 59th Street on the South, 125th Street on the North, Central Park West on the East, The Hudson River on the West. Your organization has been identified as one particularly important to residents of this area, and therefore to the successful conduct of this survey. A member of our staff will telephone you within the next several days in order to schedule a personal interview at a time convenient to you. Enclosed is a copy of the interview schedule which will be used during the discussion with you. We shall be glad, upon request, to share a summary of our findings. In addition, we will welcome any comment you care to make concerning the topic to which this survey is addressed. Letter to Dr. Marvin Schick about the Welfare of Jewish West Side Tenants (1972)

Dear Marvin: It was a pleasure seeing you at the “Sukkah in the Sky” a couple of weeks ago. I assume that with the closing of the holidays, both of us have come down to earth. Permit me to burden you with a request for information which you may be in a position to obtain for me. There is a good deal of housing going up in the area just north of my synagogue. I am anxious to contact Jewish residents both for purposes of “schooling” and “shooling.” The Housing and Development Administration sent me the Directory of Publicly Aided Housing Developments, but that does not contain a list of names of tenants. Hence, two questions: 1. Is such a list of names available so that we might pick out the Jewish names? 2. Does the city have any lists of specifically Jewish tenants? To: Alvin Hellerstein, Ira Kellman; From: Rabbi Norman Lamm; RE: Planetarium Neighborhood Council. After consultation with Mr. Max Stern, we are very anxious to have you accept appointments as our Jewish Center delegate to the Planetarium Neighborhood Council. You will notice that the meeting described in the enclosed papers has already passed, but I am mailing them anyway, just to give you an idea of the kind of work that the Council is doing.Both Mr. Stern and I feel that it is very important that the Center be represented on this group, if for no other reason than that we be kept informed of what is happening in the neighborhood because of the obvious effects that such a trend has on the nature and the future of The Jewish Center.Please let me know that you have accepted.
