Letter to Moses Feuerstein about Correspondence on the Status of the Bene Israel (1961)

Dear Moe: Enclosed you will find my correspondence with Rabbi Sherer of the Agudah. This should give you some idea of the explosive, and potentially scandalized situation which is now being created in Israel. I talked to Dr. Weiss this morning and urged him to cable Rabbi Nissim and Unterman. I also asked Rabbi Charles Weinberg to send cables to these two people encouraging them to stand fast against all pressure to change their decision.We are to meet, p.G., on December 6th. I feel we may have to take very decisive action, I therein agreeing to Rabbi Ika going at once, or producing someone from the States. There is very little that can be done until then, and even then it may be necessary for someone to be in Israel to investigate the whole thing at first hand.Sincerely yours,RABBI NORMAN LAMM

Letter to Dr. Weiss about Mebasser Content Concerns, Indian Student, and Rabbi for Gittin (1962)

Dear Dr. Weiss: Although I am now on vacation, and the sun is shining brilliantly outside, nevertheless the thought of my obligations toward Dr. Weiss are so strong that I am closeted up at this time with a dictating machine so as to carry out my responsibilities towards the Union's Indian program. First, let me indicate my complete agreement to your letter to Jhirad on June 25, 1962. I certainly hope you will clear up the financial problem you touch upon in your next to the last paragraph on Page 2. I am greatly disturbed by the letter to me from Mr. Kelman of The Jewish Agency in Bombay of June 25. He notes that he sent a copy to you, so I need not repeat the contents of his letter.The first page of his letter, dealing with the Anti-Israel policies of the UOJCA, is something that we must consider most seriously. As you know, I have already written to Jhirad counselling a less hysterical tone in the “Mebasser." I think a sharp but politic reminder by you, coming on top of my original exhortations and the more recent polemics by Kelman, may do some good. After all is said and done, we are paying for the publication of the magazine. If what Kelman says is true—especially about the insulting reference to the late Prof. J. D. Aaron—then this kind of stupid vindictiveness must be eliminated at once and we must insist upon it openly and clearly.His first paragraph on Page 2 gives us additional information about the young man we had sent to Kol Torah. At least we have some *nachas* from all our labors in India? I certainly see nothing wrong with the proposal contained in his second paragraph on Page 2. If Warhaftig will agree to send a Rabbi to India for a short time to arrange all Gittin, that is perfectly all right. I too would be much happier if all local Indians, whether Iraqe or Bene Israel, would desist from meddling in divorce matters.Dr. Samson R. לכבוד ידידי מכובדי הר"נ לאם שליט"א, שלום וברכה וכטו"ס, סלח נא ומחל לי על האיחור והעיכוב בכתיבתי אליך. כמה סיבות לדבר, ואעפי' שכבות הן אפרטם לפניך כסדרן: א. בדרכי מארה"ב נתעכבתי עוד כשבועיים באירופה. ב. מכתבך השני הגיעני למחרת שובי ולא הספקתי לפגוש את אנשי ועד בנ"י עד השבוע. ג. הדרך מיעטה את כוחותי, שיבשה את סדרי יומי ומהלך עבודתי. מה גם שנצטבור לי עכימת עבודה וענינים שונים שהשארתי בימי העדרי מן הארץ.
