My dear Rabbi and Mindel, Many thanks for both your card from Israel, personal greetings delivered by Benny, and the long letter from New York. I took your advice and had a conference call with Dr. Stern yesterday, and I accept the fact that you are sending – need some funds in their hands – and I adopted the amounts you had suggested. In fact, I added $250.00 to the leader of the seminar in case he can come two weeks ahead of time for last-minute local colour.Meanwhile, I'm sure that you, Mindel, and Sol Green will be able to fill in Dr. Stern on the local conditions, which show signs of improvement by the arrival of additional *dati* young, enthusiastic teachers at Mt. Scopus. Both Mr. Ranoschy and the President, Phil Symons, seem keen on the idea and have promised all their co-operation. It looks good, and as we are all doing our part, Ap will do his.Mindel will be particularly interested in the three-week cruise which the family and I have taken and which transported us from the world of reality into an unknown realm. World affairs were hardly known and of little consequence to us, and the places we visited were concerned that we saw the best parts of their land and left as much money as possible — but were not involved in those everyday sorrows which we had left behind and to which we only slowly returned.Kashrut worked out satisfactorily, and I'm happy to report that Gini's health improved, and the postponement of our trip to Israel till Pesach may have been a very wise decision.Glad that Sarah could accompany you and share some of your experiences.Looking forward to meeting all your family, I remain,Sincerely yours,H.A. Letter from Hans Bachrach to Abraham Stern about Booklets for Counterpoint Australia (1974)

By the time this letter arrives I hope you will have enjoyed the Sedarim – and well-earned rest. Meanwhile, we have been rushing things here a lot and I enclose (Prehscar broke) the first copies of the booklet which we have just produced. The symbol 'CP' naturally stands for Counterpoint and the lines indicate ideas which are flowing to and fro as they shall be at the many discussion groups which we are going to have. You will also notice that our motto is engraved on it. It shows that life is precious and the pre-requisite to the carrying out of the tasks ahead. It urges us to make His way our way.It also reminds me of one of the speeches of Rabbi Lamm where he points out that whilst the making of images of God is strictly prohibited, He made us and established us in His image. Our life has to be a reflection of His ideals.By our life we have to show and bear witness to His creation, and through our life we have to aim at realizing His teachings. Only when we value our life and enjoy it with vigour and strength can we carry out the above ideals and serve Him in joy.We are positively instructed to rejoice. We are told not the dead can carry out the tasks, always pointing to the sacredness of life.In the legal prescript, we are directed to push commandments aside to heal the sick. During the Holocaust this principle enabled some to survive and bear witness to that dark period and to thank God for the deliverance and the establishment of our State of Israel.The above is not explained in the leaflet as it has been pointed out that it would be much better to lift the people up to this understanding during the seminars.Continue to enjoy the rest of Passover.Greetings,

Letter from Hans Bachrach about Spending for Counterpoint Australia (1974)

Dear Rabbi Lamm, Please find enclosed a copy of the letter written today to Hillel Davis. I was pleased to hear from him on the phone that Dr. Stern is continuing his work, even though I do not know anything about the basis which he has adopted. Regarding New Zealand, I enclose copies of correspondence exchanged, which is self‑explanatory. Arnold Roth is there personally at the moment, and unless something comes up from there, I guess I will have to add US$150.00 spending money for each and every one (except the Frankies). We are very excited here about the forthcoming arrival of our friends.Hoping that you enjoyed a very good yom tov with the family, I remain,Sincerely yours,H. A. Bachrach---Letter to Mr. Mandel (excerpt)It was a pleasure to talk to you last night and to advise you that following Rabbi Lamm’s visit we will be very lucky to have a group of Yeshiva University graduates, Smicha students, and rabbis visiting Australia to hold seminars and give lectures.An invitation is extended to Jewish youth of New Zealand, up to and including university students, to participate in the months of July and August. The group could arrive in Wellington or Auckland on approximately the 14th or 15th, and in return for seminars or lectures, I would require that hospitality and sightseeing be arranged for them. In particular, I would like them to see the Waitomo Caves and Rotorua.Though we realize the logistic challenges, since you have no transport costs to and from New Zealand and no need to pay honorariums, the offer should prove viable for your community. Australian Jewish News will publish articles in advance to provide publicity.Kind regards,H. A.
