The two young men who met with you and me concerning the accommodation of Yeshiva University graduates in either the Gold or Greenberg Institutes wrote to me but failed to indicate their proper return addresses. Dear Mr. Litvin: It was a pleasure to hear from you and learn that you and your family are all well. I have had the opportunity, since seeing you last, to read through parts of your excellent work, "Jewish Identity," and I must say that it certainly is a worthwhile work and one that deserved publication and the effort you put into it. I do not believe myself competent to offer you any advice as to whether it should be printed in pocketbook edition. Letter to the Memorial Foundation of Jewish Culture Recommending Doctoral Student's Grant Application (1972)

Gentlemen: I am sending you enclosed the biographical sketch of [redacted] who is anxious to obtain a grant to study for his doctorate in Yale. I shall be writing to the applicant, advising him to file a formal application with the Foundation. I appreciate that the deadline has passed for grants for 1972–1973, but this is a special case in that the applicant is a Yemenite. Considering the paucity of Oriental Jewish scholars in Israel, and the social and political tensions about this question, it may perhaps be wise to waive your formal rules in this case.
