Letter from Dr. Weiss to Max Stern about His Donation to the Indian Jewish Community (1961)

Dear Mr. Stern: Enclosed please find copies of my letters to India and to Israel, in keeping with my recent memorandum of Sivan 18. I learned from Rabbi Lamm of your generous contribution of $250.00 for the salary of the Chazan in Panvel and the $700.00 contribution for the Tefillin which you were good enough to obtain. Since the money brought by Rabbi Lamm to India for Tefillin cannot be sent from there to Israel, due to Indian Valuta regulations, I am arranging for the transfer of these monies for other purposes. Thus, for instance, your contribution of $250.00 is already available to our friends in India for the Panvel Chazan. Since Mr. Saul Bernstein, the Administrator of the Orthodox Union, will be leaving next week for Israel, he will arrange for the payment of the Tefillin to the Ministry of Religions. This way, we will get a course of IL 2.16 per dollar, instead of IL 1.80.I will permit myself to call you on Thursday to find out whether you are available for a meeting of our Overseas Commission on Wednesday, June 21st.With many thanks for your generous support and with kindest personal regards, I amVery sincerely yours,Dr. Samson R. Letter from Dr. Weiss about OU Expenses for Indian Jewry (1962)

Dear Rabbi Lamm: Thank you for your letters of July 5th and 16th. I enclose my letters to Mr. Kelman and Mr. Jhirad. I am sending you an extra copy of my letter to Mr. Jhirad so that you may send it on confidentially to Mr. Kelman if you deem it advisable. You speak of my vacation. This vacation is scheduled to begin on August 12th. My absence from the city was caused by another visit to the fair city of Los Angeles, which was blessed with beautiful weather—making my hard work there not at all easier, with everyone around me in vacation spirit.As you see, I have not mentioned in my letter to Mr. Kelman any credit to the Union. I would rather assume it as self-understood than raise the issue.In your letter of July 5th, you want me to clarify the financial problem I touched upon in my letter to Mr. Jhirad. I do not quite know to what you refer, though you pointed out the paragraph. We had agreed that you and I, upon your return to New York, would try to raise about \$1,000 for the Magen Aboth Holiday Home, by soliciting 20 people for \$50.00 each.The Overseas Commission had agreed to pay the trip of three students to Israel, provided that they are maintained there by the Jewish Agency and that these three students are added to the six being presently sent and maintained by the Jewish Agency. Dr. Jung moved to this effect at our meeting, and it was unanimously adopted.I expect to speak to Rabbi Kotler either tonight or tomorrow morning. I shall write you where he will stay and when you could visit him. Letter from Dr. Weiss to Indian Kol Torah Student about OU Expenditure for His Tuition (1964)

Dear [redacted], Rabbi Norman Lamm has referred your letter of January 20th to me for reply. Rabbi Lamm is leaving for South Africa on February 2nd and, therefore, could not reply himself. On the other hand, he did not want your letter to remain unanswered until his return four weeks hence. In order for us here to pursue your request to pay the expenditure of your private tuition, we shall need an official letter from your Rosh Yeshivah, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, to the effect that these arrangements for private tutoring are being made with his consent and upon his recommendation and that your progress is periodically ascertained by him or another Rosh Yeshivah of Kol Torah assigned by him to examine you. Further, we need to know the amount involved per month. Upon receipt of the above certification and information, we shall, I assure you, give your request our most sympathetic consideration.
