Letter from Dr. Schnall about R. Lamm's Appointment to YU Presidency (1976)

Dear Norman: Please forgive me for not writing sooner. We were in Israel this summer and it was there that I heard the exciting news of your appointment. It is certainly the most important thing that has happened to any member of our family, and to say that I am proud to be "close to the action" is a matchless understatement. The magnitude of the accomplishment is second only to the responsibility inherent in the office. Without being pretentious, I know that you will provide the kind of leadership that, in my opinion, has been lacking at Yeshiva for some time. How are Mindy and the family? They must be ecstatic and swelling with pride. I had the opportunity to speak with your mother. She, of course, expressed equal excitement as well as concern for your health. She's a Yiddishe Mama to the end. Tova and I thoroughly enjoyed Eretz Yisrael, although I did far more work than touring. We were there through a grant from the Lucius Littauer Foundation to study radical protest and dissent in Israel. Though I know you have little time for such things, I've taken the liberty of enclosing some recent material of my own which may border on your interests. I am delighted to learn that an outstanding scholar, scientist, and humanitarian such as yourself was chosen to head the great University from which I received my entire education. As Vice-President of the Association of Orthodox Jewish Scientists, I am also delighted to learn that a member of our organization, namely yourself, was chosen for the prestigious post of President of Yeshiva University.
