Letter to R. Langer about Translating "A Hedge of Roses" Into French (1974)

Dear Rabbi Langer, At that wonderful dinner on your behalf at the Waldorf Astoria, I met the young French rabbi who is now serving in your former pulpit. I believe his name is Rabbi Gottlieb. He spoke to me about the desirability of having a French translation of my little book on טהרת המשפחה, A Hedge of Roses. He said that funds would be available for publishing and distributing the book in France, but that he does not have the time to make the translation.I inquired of one of my people who I thought would be qualified, but he tells me that he does not think he is sufficiently competent to draw up a first draft. What is needed, apparently, is someone to make a good initial translation, and then Rabbi Gottlieb or one of his colleagues will edit the material both for style and to change those references in the book which are peculiarly American and substitute the appropriate French dimension.My question is: do you know of anyone in your community who would be willing to undertake such a translation of a first draft? If not, do you think that someone like Rabbi Gottlieb or one of his colleagues could undertake the translation, using not the English but the Hebrew version of my book?Please give my warmest regards to Mrs. Langer.Cordially,Rabbi Norman LammNL: cw

Letter to Yaakov Feldheim Requesting Permission to Publish French Translation of "A Hedge of Roses" (1999)

Dear Mr. Feldheim: The attached fax copy of a letter I recently received speaks for itself. I think it would be a great mitzvah to grant permission for him to publish A Hedge of Roses in French, especially in light of the fact that there are now some 750,000 to 850,000 Jews in France, the majority of whom are of North African origin, and who still can be influenced to keep the principles of taharat mishpacha even as they acculturate and modernize. This is a community which is highly traditional, but which is gradually coming into the mainstream of French life, and our chances for success in keeping them within the confines of Torah are much better than with the Ashkenazim. Letter about French Translation of "A Hedge of Roses" (2001)

Dear [ ], I have been informed that you are preparing to publish a French language edition of my book A Hedge of Roses (copyright 1966), which has been translated into French, with my consent, by [ ]. This is to confirm that I waive any claim I may have to royalties from the sale of the French language print edition of A Hedge of Roses (the “Book”), subject to the following conditions: (1) the copyright notice and the dedication page shall appear exactly as they did in the 1987 English language edition of the Book, and I am enclosing a photocopy thereof; (2) prior to publication of the Book, you shall submit the page proofs (including the cover design and any artwork or illustrations) to me for my review and written approval; (3) upon publication, you shall send me without cost fifty (50) copies of the Book for my personal use; (4) Les Editions Colbo will indemnify and hold me harmless from and against all claims, including intellectual property claims and litigation, that may be asserted against me as a result of the publication of the French language edition of the Book. Kindly indicate your agreement to these terms by signing a copy of this letter where indicated below and returning it to me.
