Exchange with Phillip Symons Inviting R. Lamm to Mount Scopus College (1974)

Dear Rabbi Lamm, I am writing this letter on behalf of Mount Scopus College as all of my fellow members of the Board of Governors have pleasant memories of your visit to Melbourne last year. We are at present planning for the coming Seminars, although I have no doubt that you are being kept aware of the position by Mr. Bachrach. I believe you are aware that each year our school conducts an annual appeal for funds within the Melbourne Jewish Community and our appeal time, which is allocated by the Board of Deputies, is for the month of November. This year is the 25th anniversary of the founding of Mount Scopus College and we have already had several functions to commemorate this event, but we hope to have an enlarged Appeal emphasising this period of our growth. I am therefore writing to you to enquire whether it would be at all possible for you to visit Australia and act as an Emissary for our Appeal this year. The period of your visit could be as short as 10–14 days and naturally expenses would be paid for you and your wife if she would like to accompany you, together with an appropriate fee. I am sure that you appreciate the importance of a successful Appeal to the College and we would be most appreciative if you are able to come to Melbourne to help us in this important task. Letter from Hans Bachrach to Mrs. Weisberger about R. Lamm's Lodging in Australia (1973)

Dear Mrs. Weisberger, thank you very much for your letter of 31st May. We assume that Rabbi and Mrs. Lamm will prefer to stay in a motel rather than at private hospitality which is offered to them, and unless we hear from you to the contrary we shall make such arrangements, except for Friday night when we assume that Rabbi and Mrs. Lamm will accept private hospitality in order to be as close as possible to synagogues and places of Jewish activities. As soon as we get confirmation of the above, we shall advise you of the special phone numbers and addresses. Meanwhile, during business hours c/– the above and c/– 6 St. Aubins Avenue, Caulfield, Vic. 3161, phone number 52.5523 will suffice for contact points. We previously received biographical details of Rabbi Lamm and hope we will get some publicity next week in the Jewish press. החיים והשלום לכבוד האי גברא רבא איש האשכולות המוכתר בנימוסין ה"ה כש"ת הרב הגאון ד"ר לעם שליטה: אחסצשה"ט באהבה רבה ונאמנה הנני מקוה להשית שמכתבי ומצאהו ביחד עם הרבנית בקו הבריאות והשלם אמ"ס בנידון להערתו בש"ק שעבר בנוגע כבוד או"א לעכום. הנני מביא פה כמה הערות מן המקור (יבמות כב עא) – ערוה גופה אי לאו שלא יאמרו באין מקדושה חמורה לקדושה קלה – (דברי הגמרא) רמבם שופטים הלכות ממרים פה הלכה יא – מביא בזה"ל הגר אסור לקלל אביו העכום ולהכותו – ולא ובזהו כדי שלא יאמרו (באנו) באו מקדושה חמורה לקדושה קלה שהרי זה מבלה אביו אלא נוהג בו מקצת כבוד
