Dear Immanuel: I have just spoken with my sister-in-law, Judith, who conveyed to me warm regards from you and Amelie – for which I thank you very much. You mentioned that you may be free for Saturday, November 29th, and I am delighted, especially after the tussle over who should extend the invitation to Bernstein and the Union people in Chicago, who had insisted that they wanted you for Shabbat. I have just tried calling Saul Bernstein, but he is out of town. At any rate, I am very pleased to learn that you will now be able to be with us for the entire weekend.I shall try to make immediate arrangements — please let me know at once if you want it only for Friday night and Saturday, or for Saturday night as well and, possibly, for Sunday night too.A slight problem may be presented for Friday night dinner. We plan to have ours on the tenth floor of The Center, and while I was aware that you use the special elevator you designed for the Synagogue, I do not recall if you avail yourself of elevator arrangements at the Cameron on a floor of Rabbi Soloveitchik’s heter in The Center.The program for that Saturday calls for me to speak and address my son. If it is no imposition on you, it will be my pleasure to invite you to give a drasha about half an hour before Minchah, and possibly to speak at the Shabbat ante. If this can be confirmed in advance, I would like to include it in the Bulletin and make sure of a maximum attendance for about 70.While I was in Nairobi, Kenya, about two years ago, an of course, be kept confidential, Judith gave me information about the Far reception that you and Amelie might want when you are here. I look forward to reciprocating in kind. Would you be able to give me any information about the London person who has served for about two years? Letter from R. David Hartman with Invitation to Conference on the Study and Advancement of Judaism (1970)

Dear Norman: Our Conference this year will be held from Monday, June 22nd, through to Sunday, June 28th, at Auberge Lala Truite, Trout Lake, Quebec (Tel. No: area code 819, 326-3408). We hope that you will be able to stay over until Sunday (June 28th) in order to spend Shabbas with us, as it is very important for the spirit of our community that we spend Shabbas together. If you cannot, for some reason, stay for Shabbas, please indicate this on the attached sheet.Due to our financial strain this year, we are unable to cover the expenses of wives who may accompany their husbands to the Conference. I hope that you understand. As a matter of fact, if anyone could raise some money for the Segals Center within their own community, it would be greatly appreciated.It would be preferred if children did not accompany Conference participants, but if it is necessary that children are brought along, please indicate this as well on the attached sheet.We will be leaving from Montreal at 4:30 p.m. by bus. We will be meeting together beforehand (from 1:00 p.m. onwards) at the De Sola Club, 3636 Ontario Avenue, Montreal 18, telephone number: 845-0430. When you arrive in Montreal, please proceed directly to the De Sola Club. Taxi expenses will be covered by the Segals Center.The program for the Conference is attached. In the meantime, we shall be mailing to you, compliments of the Segals Center, copies of Emil Fackenheim's new book, *God's Presence in History*; as well as Moshe Greenberg's article on the relationship of the Jew and the non-Jew; Nahum Goldmann's article on *The Future of Israel*, and Isaiah Leibowitz’s article on *The Spiritual and Religious Meaning of Victory and Might*.Please return the attached sheet. Dear Reb Nochum: I want to cordially invite you to join me at breakfast with Governor Nelson Rockefeller on Monday morning, October 12th (Columbus Day) at 9:00 A.M. in my office, 5 Beekman Street, New York City. I am inviting you, together with a small number of Orthodox rabbinic and lay leaders from every part of our city, for a breakfast with us. Attorney General Louis Lefkowitz will also drop in to have unpublicized off-the-record discussion with Governor Rockefeller about issues that are troubling us.As I have worked closely with them over the years, I know that you will enjoy this off-the-cuff talk with them in the intimate atmosphere of a breakfast.
