Dear Dr. Lamm – I trust this letter reaches you and your family well. I enjoy reading about Yeshiva’s continuing development in “Alumni News.” I very much enjoyed our recent brief conversation concerning the translation of your book, The Hedge of Roses, into Russian. As I mentioned to you at that time, I appreciate your agreement to give the right of translation to Shuvu Ani. I would appreciate a letter from you confirming your decision. We hope to begin the actual work of translating very soon, but would prefer not to proceed without your official approval in writing, as I am sure you understand. Here in Jerusalem the weather is beautiful, the economics worse are horrendous, and SHUVU ANI is, in face of all sorts of financial cutbacks in government funding, growing quickly in breadth and depth. We have just completed another extended weekend “Advanced” Seminar, which we continue to conduct for “graduates” of our introductory Jewish Heritage Seminars. The Russian new immigrants who participated in this program last weekend enjoyed themselves immensely, while learning worlds about their Jewish roots and deepening their identification with our rich heritage. More and more I see the beauty and vitality of the relationships these Russian seminar participants are forging with our teaching and guidance. The telephone calls come into our Center daily – they seek advice in all areas of their lives to a new society here in Israel, and the Russian staff with whom I work is crucial in the successful absorption of these relatively new Israelis. It is a privilege to be part of this work. I enclose a copy of our most recent issues of “Shavvim,” the newsletter of the SHUVU ANI Center for Soviet Jews. Letter from Baruch Litvin about "A Hedge of Roses" (1966)

Dear Rebbi, Shalom: We are home again in the great Midbor Mt. Clemens, we hope that you and your family had a Freilichen and Kosherln Pesach. I wish to thank you for publishing "A Hedge of Roses," it will take its place as a "classic" as long as there will be an English speaking Jewry, it is a real gem. Since I did not have the privilege of getting an academic education, I dare not review it, fearing of what our Sages instructed us: "Kol Hamosif goreah," so I am trying to hold to the line, but with your permission may I cite to you what the Zohar has to say on the above citation.On the verse in Song of Songs VI,11: I went down into the garden of nuts, for as the nut has a shell surrounding and protecting the kernel inside, so it is with everything sacred: the sacred principle occupies the interior, whilst the "other side" encircles the exterior.Observe that the exterior of the nut, the more it is enlarged the more worthless it becomes. As a mnemonic we have the sacrifices of the Feast of Tabernacles, the number which goes on diminishing with the increase of days. I hope that I have proven with the help of the Zohar Hakadosh the instruction of the Sages "Koi Hamosif goreah."If in my enthusiasm the Moshol is not 100 percent to the Nimshol, please forgive me.As to the "Meteor" that I sent out in Tradition: The Religious Implication... I leave it for another letter, if I don’t bore you too much. I have to have some self-expression and you as a Rebbi and friend I asn have permission to do it.Here, in your Tradition and Jewish Life, I certainly had a BerriJof wine and a good portion of Lamb, so we are wishing you to keep on to be as dynamic as you are. May the Almighty give you strength and see to it that no evil eye shall have any effect upon you, "Yaasher Kochacho."

Letter about French Translation of "A Hedge of Roses" (2001)

Dear [ ], I have been informed that you are preparing to publish a French language edition of my book A Hedge of Roses (copyright 1966), which has been translated into French, with my consent, by [ ]. This is to confirm that I waive any claim I may have to royalties from the sale of the French language print edition of A Hedge of Roses (the “Book”), subject to the following conditions: (1) the copyright notice and the dedication page shall appear exactly as they did in the 1987 English language edition of the Book, and I am enclosing a photocopy thereof; (2) prior to publication of the Book, you shall submit the page proofs (including the cover design and any artwork or illustrations) to me for my review and written approval; (3) upon publication, you shall send me without cost fifty (50) copies of the Book for my personal use; (4) Les Editions Colbo will indemnify and hold me harmless from and against all claims, including intellectual property claims and litigation, that may be asserted against me as a result of the publication of the French language edition of the Book. Kindly indicate your agreement to these terms by signing a copy of this letter where indicated below and returning it to me.
