Letter from Abraham Jhirad to Dr. Weiss about OU Budgetary Statement for India (1962)

Dear Dr. Weiss, Enclosed with this, one copy each of the following: (1) Budgetary Statement (2) Receipt and payment account for the year ended 1961 (3) Report from Mr. Grossman about the classes (4) The official receipt for Rs. 500.00. The year 1961 shows a surplus of Rs. 629/- but if the amounts earmarked for the salary of the Hazzan of the F.R.I. Congregation, Rs. 525/-; Rs. 105/- for the students of the Talmud Torah, and Rs. 53/- collected for Hebra Kaddisha Fund of the Congregation, it will be seen that there is actually a deficit of Rs. 1212/-.The sum of Rs. 500/- was received in December 1961 for the classes for the period of July to December 1961, as also our contribution to the camp project for the summer of 1962.The death of the Hon. Treasurer has created a temporary set-back, and a minimum balance of Rs. 500/- is our only reserve.We feel confident that we should be able to collect another Rs. 500/- once a meeting with Mr. Grossman is arranged, and it may be possible to do so as soon as the Majlis permits.The regular classes are progressing steadily. Students of various groups are making progress in Hebrew, Jewish History, and Customs. There is also a good response to singing songs and having discussions about religious topics.This is to replace Oneg Shabbath activities, as the Grossmans stay very far from the Synagogues. Similar meetings are serving as Shabbath activities for other Congregations after the Mincha service.We are grateful to Rabbi Lamm for the most generous proposal for the setting up of a knitting mill here. We shall work hard at it and, by the grace of the Almighty, we shall be able to start something very soon.Rabbi Lamm gave me to understand that my request about books, etc. has been forwarded to you.Mr. Grossman was not very communicative about the students whose travel expenses are to be borne by the JCA. He stipulated many conditions for having undertaken to bear the expenses. We would very much like to use some of the Agency teachers…

Letter to Dr. Weiss about Correspondence with Abraham Jhirad on Indian Jewry (1962)

Dear Dr. Weiss: Enclosed please find the rather lengthy letter from Jhirad plus the announcement from the World Council of Synagogues. It will be worth your while reading through it. After you have made copies, please return them to me, because I have not yet answered Jhirad. As a matter of fact, I would very much like to meet with you so that this kind of correspondence can be better centralized. Sincerely, Rabbi Norman Lamm.

Letter from Dr. Weiss about OU Expenses for Indian Jewry (1962)

Dear Rabbi Lamm: Thank you for your letters of July 5th and 16th. I enclose my letters to Mr. Kelman and Mr. Jhirad. I am sending you an extra copy of my letter to Mr. Jhirad so that you may send it on confidentially to Mr. Kelman if you deem it advisable. You speak of my vacation. This vacation is scheduled to begin on August 12th. My absence from the city was caused by another visit to the fair city of Los Angeles, which was blessed with beautiful weather—making my hard work there not at all easier, with everyone around me in vacation spirit.As you see, I have not mentioned in my letter to Mr. Kelman any credit to the Union. I would rather assume it as self-understood than raise the issue.In your letter of July 5th, you want me to clarify the financial problem I touched upon in my letter to Mr. Jhirad. I do not quite know to what you refer, though you pointed out the paragraph. We had agreed that you and I, upon your return to New York, would try to raise about \$1,000 for the Magen Aboth Holiday Home, by soliciting 20 people for \$50.00 each.The Overseas Commission had agreed to pay the trip of three students to Israel, provided that they are maintained there by the Jewish Agency and that these three students are added to the six being presently sent and maintained by the Jewish Agency. Dr. Jung moved to this effect at our meeting, and it was unanimously adopted.I expect to speak to Rabbi Kotler either tonight or tomorrow morning. I shall write you where he will stay and when you could visit him. He usually is at Lederman’s in Fleischmanns, which should be about one hour’s car ride from your place, on the other side of the Catskills (the Tannersville–Hunter section).I do hope that in spite of your voluminous correspondence you are enjoying some rest and that you are applying to yourself the kind admonitions you gave me—namely, not to work hard and long.With kindest personal regards and all good wishes, I amVery sincerely yours,Dr. Samson R.
